What this Coleman Cabin Camping Tent with Screen Room is about
This is a tent from the new series they launched recently, so there are two tents for 4 and 6 people, and each of them has two variants, without and with the waterproof porch. The top picture above shows the 6-person tent without the porch, but the version with the porch is shown below:
There are no principal differences between the two versions, but the tent with the porch offers more of the fully protected area, this is why I shall focus on this option more than on the other tent.
In any case, this is a tunnel-type tent and its structure is best understood when you see it without the fly. I use the word ‘cabin’ in the name because this is officially part of the name of this tent, but it is best to simply disregard it. This structure has nothing in common with cabin tents. I have included this tent in my list of best tunnel type tents for camping.
So the picture above shows the tent from the front where you have the only door with the central zipper and the screen room as the front area. Note also that the tent is quite tall with its 6 ft 4 inches (193 cm) peak height.
The screen room & the inner room
This screen room is floored but there is a narrow mesh section just in front of the inner door. This is added so that the rainwater can go away, and this is primarily important for the tent’s version without the porch because the screen room is not fully protected. Note that the floor is not removable.
But when the porch is added, this screen room offers full protection from the rain, although not full protection from the groundwater, this is because of the mentioned floor mesh section. The picture below shows how deep the porch is and how well protected the screen room is. You can put a small side table here and a couple of chairs.
The inner room is as you would expect, fully protected from the elements and from insects. The floor is a bathtub style. So I would describe this tent as a 2-room tent plus the porch, just bear in mind what this all implies. I have included it in my list of best tents with a screen room.
The fly & porch
The porch is shown in the pictures above and it adds around 1/3 of the protected space. But even the tent without the porch still has the awning and windbreakers on the sides (see the top picture above), so the screen room is partly protected.
The picture below shows the tent from the back side and with the fly on, so you can see some interesting features in its design. As you realize, the fly is a partial-coverage type, but this is why you have those 3 nice screened windows on all the sides. They are the double-layer type with mesh and inner panels for protection and privacy.
Ventilation
This tent is with huge mesh areas everywhere, so ventilation should never be an issue. The picture above shows that the partial fly is well separated from the tent’s body, so air can circulate and this will eliminate condensation.
But as you realize from the picture above, they have added a floor vent on the back side. This is a nice addition which you will need if you have to keep the panels closed due to rain. In both versions, with or without the porch, you can almost always keep the inner door open and have extra airflow in this tunnel configuration. There is not much one could object to this design.
Who is it for
Space-wise, this is a bit tricky. They do not provide the official numbers, but the total base is 13 x 10 ft (396 x 305 cm) and this means 130 ft² (12 m²) for the screen room and the inner tent together. This would mean 21.6 ft² (2 m²) per person, but there is also the porch area if you choose this tent’s variant.
So in any case, this is lots of space but note that the sleeping area is around 9.3 square meters or so. This is still enough to accommodate 6 people, and you still have the screen room for boots and shoes, and the porch area.
Weight-wise, the tent is heavy with its 32.5 lb (14.74 kg). So this is not something to carry long distances. But the packed size (L x D) 26 x 12 inches (66 x 30 cm) is very good so you can transport it even on a bicycle.
Seasons-wise & climate-wise, in view of so much mesh around, this tent is best suited for warm weather camping or maximum for two seasons (late spring, summer, and early autumn). Though the windows and the inner door are indeed with panels so you can close them all to preserve warmth if it is chilly outside.
I would not use it in areas with strong winds, such a fly is not the best option for such weather conditions. But at Coleman’s site they claim the tent can withstand winds up to 35 mph.
Materials
The picture below shows all the elements in the package and you can see also its carry bag.
The poles & stakes
The poles are fiberglass, you have them 4, one is used for the awning support. They attach to the tent through clips and sleeves on the roof, and on the base you have the usual pin and ring system, see the picture below. All is color-coded. You have a full set of simple steel stakes shown in the picture above.
The fabric
The fabric is their WeatherTec polyester, they do not provide any information about waterproof rating. It is probably not high but you do not need much in any case if the seams are well done. They use inverted seams in all their tents. The floor is most likely a polyethylene, there is no official info about this, and it is with welded corners.
Other features
You have a large storage organizer unit, and the tent is also with an e-cable port, both are shown in the pictures.
