The Teton Hacienda 8 Person Family Camping Tent is very large, tall and freestanding, and with a nicely designed hinged door.

Key features & benefits
- Huge cabin-type tent.
- Freestanding.
- Tall tent.
- Hinged door.
- One door and 2 windows.
What this is about
The Teton brand (formerly known as Teton Sports) is not really the place where you would go to find large family camping tents, so this Hacienda 8 Person Family Camping Tent is a bit unusual for the brand. From what I remember, in the past 12 years or so, they have not had big tents to offer.
The tent combines some very good features, with some that are a bit less good as you will realize below. But to start from its general type, this is a very typical cabin-style tent with straight and steep walls. Below you can see it without the fly to understand its structure.
The fly is a partial coverage type and it protects only the ceiling. The tent is quite tall, with a peak height of 82 inches (208 cm). The picture below shows that this is a stand-up height for typical users.
The door and windows
This tent has only one door, and in view of its huge size this may not look enough. However, the door is its best feature because it is gigantic and it is a hinged type.
From the picture below you can realize what this means, it has a frame created with poles that you put into the sleeves on the door’s perimeter.
Closing the door is easy, similar to a door at home, so you do not have to wrestle with zippers all the time. Because of this, I have included the tent in my list of tents with hinged door.
It is surprising that they designed it with a single separate window opposite to the door. In view of its size and such huge walls, they missed an opportunity to make it much more livable. Hard to understand the logic of the design. But the door has yet another mesh window on its upper half.
Materials
The tent is of a collapsible type, so it needs assembly. There are many separate elements in the package, and they are shown in the picture.
The poles: You have a combination of fiberglass used for the roof and roof perimeter poles, and steel used for the legs. The roof and perimeter poles diameter is 12.7 mm. The leg poles diameter is 19 mm.
For the hinged door you have 7 mm diameter fiberglass (the red poles in the picture above).
In view of the perimeter poles, the structure is quite strong and stable. Not many tents of this type have this addition.
As you realize from the picture above, it comes with 8 long stakes.
The fabric: For the body and the fly they use 68D polyester ripstop combined with 40D polyester no see-um mesh. So you have a good material here.
The floor is a much stronger 210D polyester Oxford. Surprisingly, there is no statement about waterproof rating, so I asked them and received the following reply:
The waterproof ratings for the Hacienda tent are 1800 mm for both the tent body and rainfly, and 2000 mm for the tent floor. These ratings mean the materials can handle a strong amount of water pressure before moisture begins to seep through. In practical terms, the Hacienda offers solid protection in moderate to heavy rain, especially when it’s set up properly and the rainfly is secured. Note that they include a gear loft, it attaches on the ceiling, you can see it in the pictures.
Ventilation
The tent has a ceiling that is all mesh, and you can see this in the picture, this is more than 22 square meters of mesh above your head, truly huge. So vapor can escape from the inner tent. The fly is partial coverage and shallow, no need for roof vents, so some of the vapor may leave the tent.
The windows helps ventilation with the mesh, but when it rains this must be closed. However, there are no floor vents, and it is hard to understand what they were thinking.
Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for 8 people. They write that they do not use the usual backpacking principle to determine the capacity. This principle indeed makes no much sense for family camping tents, but there is nothing better, and they do not say how they determine the capacity.
In any case, the tent offers incredible 229.3 ft² (21.3 m²) of the floored area. This implies 28.6 ft² (2.67 m²) per person.
Clearly, if you would apply the mentioned backpacking principle, the capacity would easily be around 12 or so. Note that the tent is a square that measures 128 x 128 inches (462 x 462 cm). I have included it in my list of very large tents.
Regarding seasons & climate, the tent is boxy and tall, and it is best suited for calm weather without much wind and rain. I mentioned the issue of ventilation, so it is hard to say which climate it would be best suited for.
On the other hand, you have seen that it comes with roof perimeter poles, so the structure is quite stable and strong.
Regarding the weight, with 35.65 lb (16.2 kg) it may look heavy, but bear in mind its size. The area/weight ratio of this tent is very good, you will see below how I rate it.
The packed size for such a large tent is more than good, the dimensions of the carry bag shown below are 27.56 x 11.42 x 11.42 inches (70 x 29 x 29 cm).
But this is not all; the carry bag is with a backpack type design, and you can see this in the second picture below. It comes with straps so you can carry it like a pack. You also have a carry handle on the side.
Regarding the price, I would say it is a bit steep, but the tent is indeed huge. Please check the link below for updates.
