What this is about
The Hawthorne is a new 2018 series of the Browning Camping brand, which currently includes this 6-person as well as a 4-person tent both completely freestanding dome-style tents. This freestanding feature is because of its fly which attaches to the corners so you can pitch this tent anywhere and you can also move it around and rotate. I am not sure why they describe the fly as ‘full length’, it covers the biggest part of the tent but the lower sections of the doors are not protected by the fly.
The downside of this is that the fly is without any vestibules so you have no space for gear. There are only small awnings above the doors which you see in the picture. But this also means that getting in and out is easy. Anyhow, this is a single-room structure with 2 doors on the opposite sides, very simple and easy to set up. The doors are with mesh in the upper sections so you effectively have two windows, and this is a luxury with dome tents.
Who is it for
Space-wise, the declared capacity is 6 people, and the floor area is 100 ft² (9.3 m²) and the dimensions are 10 x 10 ft (3.05 x 3.05 cm), so this is a nicely proportioned square space. The picture below shows what they suggest for using the floor. There is indeed enough space for 6 people, but there are no vestibules to store the gear.
If used by 6 people, the area per person is 16.7 ft² (1.55 m²). This may work if you have no gear, for example at a summer festival or an open-air concert. But for a family camping, this is a tent for maximum 3 people, perfect for couples as well. But you will see in the comparison table below that it is bigger than some of its top competitors.
Weight-wise, the tent weighs 16 lb (7.26 kg), so if it looks too heavy it is always the best to see how this compares with some other similar tents, you will see some in the comparison table below. You will see that it stands well when compared with other tents. But clearly, this is not the lightest option to carry on the trail. If this is what you need, I suggest that you check my list with best 6-person backpacking tents.
Seasons-wise & climate-wise, in my view, this is a summer camping tent which is best used in quiet areas without much wind and rain combined. The fly is not exactly a full-coverage type, you realize that the doors are not fully protected. I have asked them about this and received a frank answer confirming this. This is a reliable and responsible brand and I really appreciated such an honest answer received from them. The picture below shows the tent without the fly so you can see the poles structure and the mesh sections.
So ventilation should never be an issue with such a design, there are mesh sections on the sides and on the top, for an optimal vertical air flow. The fly does not go completely to the ground so you do not need floor vents here.
But this tent is not the best option for a cool climate, and if you need a tent for such an environment it is best to check my long list of cold weather tents for camping.
Materials & construction
This is a very affordable tent, so the poles are fiberglass with 11 mm diameter and shock corded, with aluminum ferrules. You have them 3, the two longer poles create the simple dome and the third is a brow pole that creates small brims above the doors.
The poles are connected to the tent with clips, so this is a good news for those who hate sleeves, and the structure is fully self-supporting and freestanding even when you attach the fly. You can literally move the tent around even with the fly on. The structure is similar to the Alps Cedar Ridge Rimrock 6 Tent which is a sub-brand from the same company.
The fabric is 75D 185T polyester with 1500 mm coating, the same for the fly and the floor. So this is reasonably durable, and such a rating is quite enough for normal summer camping conditions. All seams are factory-sealed. The inner tent fabric is breathable but not waterproof.
Note that the doors are with panels on the lower section and with dual layers in the upper sections, so you effectively have two windows on the opposite sides, for views and for a good air crossflow.
- They have used #8 zippers here.
- Gear loft is included.
- There are several mesh storage pockets.
- 8 inches (20 cm) steel stakes and guy ropes are in the package.

In the summary of this Browning Camping Hawthorne 6 Person Tent review, I would stress again that this is a very simple and easy to use construction, designed for occasional summer camping in calm weather conditions. If you are at an open-air concert or summer festival with your friends, this is a tent to consider. For summer camping, simply disregard the official capacity and use it for 3 people or so.
If you need to see more options from the same capacity range, it is best to check in the category Tents for 5 & 6 people here in the site. You might want to check their Browning Camping Big Horn 5 tent which is built in the cabin style. If you would like a tent with a full coverage fly, please check these Slumberjack Adult Daybreak Tent 6 Person and Slumberjack Roughhouse 6 Person Tent.
