This Kelty Sequoia 6 Person Tent is a new model they launched in 2018, a very tall yet full-coverage fly reliable tent with steel poles.
Key features & benefits
- Very tall tent.
- Large vestibule.
- Full-cover fly.
- Great packed size.
What type tent is this
The Sequoia 6 is a completely new tent on the market, and it looks like a cabin type tent although the main poles are not completely straight. But note that it comes with a full coverage fly and a vestibule, and this makes it different from other cabin tents. Having such a fly, the tent is without windows, but you have mesh everywhere around as the picture below shows.
In any case, this is a very livable structure with 82 inches (208 cm) inner peak height. Note also that this is a double-layer structure, with an inner tent and the fly.
The tent is freestanding, but having the fly with a large vestibule, you will have to stake all this down in order to make it fully functional.
Who is it for
Sizewise, the declared capacity of this tent is 6 people. The inner floor area is 87 ft² (8 m²) which makes it 14.5 ft² (1.33 m²) per person. So they have used the backpacking principle to determine the tent’s capacity.
But you have a huge vestibule here, and this is what makes it different from most of the cabin tents; the vestibule adds 42 ft² (3.9 m²) of the fully protected area for storage of your equipment, shoes, etc. This adds to its livability, and in view of this, the very modest capacity of the inner area does not look bad at all. The total covered area per person becomes 2 m² and this is what makes the tent reasonably suitable for 6 people. Though I would not use it for more than 4 people.
Seasons-wise, such a design makes it suitable for any weather situations in a 3-season use. The full coverage fly will protect you and your equipment completely.
The packed size is really great, 26 x 10 inches (66 x 25), so you can transport it even on a motorbike. A great tool for a group of friends on a motorbike tour. Though the weight is 23.875 lb (10.83 kg), so this is a camping tent for places with a motorized access.
Materials & structure
The poles are thick steel and very reliable. You have them 4, plus 2 brow poles which make the walls vertical and this all increases the livability of the interior space.
The inner tent is largely a mesh, so this is great for airflow and to combat condensation. Note that the fly is with a large vent on the back so this should help against tent’s sweating. But they should have added one or two extra vents.
The floor is 68D polyester and the same material is the mighty fly which you see below. Both are with the waterproof rating of 1800 mm. All seams are taped, so you definitely have all protection you need.
There are hanging mesh pockets for each occupant, for small gear or clothes. You also have an integrated “Night Light” pocket which you will use to put your headlamp and this will create ambient light.

Good and less good features
Here is my short summary:
- Full fly for a complete protection.
- Very reliable Kelty’s product.
- Great vestibule.
- Great height.
- Only one door.
- Very small pockets.
- Small area per person.
- They could have added more vents.
One door for such a tent may not sound good. Though it is very tall and vertical due to the brow poles so getting in and out is easy. I feel one vent might not be enough if you use the tent in a warmer climate.

Kelty is a globally renown brand and this Kelty Sequoia 6 Person Tent review shows that they have built yet another great camping tent which offers a complete protection from elements. The full coverage fly and the height are two remarkable features here, and the former implies the very useful vestibule as well. The tent is compact, built to protect rather than for luxury, but see its impressive height.
Note that they have also built a smaller 4-person version with very similar features. There are several of Kelty’s tents presented here in the site, just to know if you feel you need something different. So check the Kelty Trail Ridge 6 which is also with a full coverage fly, and the Kelty Yellowstone 6 which is a bit different. If you want something with windows, please check this nee Eureka Desert Canyon 6 tent. Checks also this new 2018 version of the Big Agnes Tensleep Station 6 tent.
