What is in the name
The Kelty Trail Ridge 6 is the tent from the new series of three tents, for 4, 6, and 8 people. They have included the footprint, so this is both good and bad.
- The good is that such an addition can really protect the tent’s floor from sharp objects, and extend its lifetime.
- The bad is that they force you to buy it, which I dislike in general. Perhaps you already have something to use with such a tent, so why buying. It would be better to have it extra as an option.
In what follows, I describe the features and benefits mentioned above.
What is new in this model
The Kelty Ridge 6 tent has been on the market for several years already (at least 5 as far as I remember), but this is a new version of the pack. They launched it with the included footprint, though this is not the only new thing here. There are other differences, you will notice that the new version has one brow pole as compared with two poles in the previous version.
Note also that the vestibules are completely redesigned. Now you have a central zipper; in the previous version it was a D-shaped zipper and the vestibule would roll on one side only. The present design allows for more varieties, and it is better in my view.
The floor dimensions are different now; the previous version was a square structure. You will notice also that the two vents are now positioned differently; they are on the two vestibules. Both versions are currently available on the market, see them here.
What type is this – who is it for
This is a freestanding tent, a simple structure with an incredibly easy setup. This implies that you can pitch it anywhere, on any surface. You do not have to stake it out, but certainly, do not miss to do so if you can.
This is a fully double-layer type as well, this is typical for smaller 3-season camping tents, but such a feature is missing in some models like this NEMO Wagontop 6. By ‘fully double’, I mean that the rain fly is a full coverage, which is a great feature as it provides a better protection from elements. You can compare this with some other models like the Eureka Sunrise EX 6 where the fly is minimal.
The Trail Ridge 6 is a camping tent, but its packed weight is only 15 lb 10 oz (7.1 kg). So this is a very lightweight tent indeed. They give also the minimum trail weight, which is 12 lb 3 oz (5.5 kg). So when the pieces of the tent are shared among the users, it can indeed be carried on the trail. But realistically, this would work only for groups of adults. If you are with kids, you will have a lot of other stuff, so do not even think of carrying such a tent.
So who is it for really?
The floor size is 82 ft² (7.62 m²), not so great for 6 people. Use it for 4, and you will have a great space for camping. So for parents and two kids, perhaps plus one dog as well, it will be perfect. The two vestibules will provide a lot of protected space for storage.
But if this is for adults on the trail, you can certainly squeeze 6 people inside, and you can carry this tent with you, this in particular in the trail-variant without the footprint.
The structure and setup
I think it is best that you first see this video by Kelty, the girl is showing the 4-person tent, but the structure is the same:
So, as you see, the setup can hardly be easier. This is a simple rectangular dome-shape structure. Everything is color-coded, with gray and green webbing on the two sides, no need to guess what goes where.
The inner space
The inner space is simple, not much to say about it, just to stress that the peak height is 72 inches (183 cm), quite reasonable (if you are of my size, but many are taller). The ridge pole raises the two walls and makes them vertical, and this increases the volume and makes the space more livable.
There are mesh pockets for each user on the walls around. The tent comes with a bonus gear loft which you will attach to the ceiling, so this is a very useful detail. You also have a headlamp pocket on the wall (shown in the picture) which creates a pleasant ambient light in the tent.
All stuff here is quite durable. The floor is a bathtub style and it is 68D polyester and waterproof. The same denier is in the upper panels, but here you also have a lot of mesh which is 40D. This is a good design and ventilation should not be an issue in this tent.
You have two main aluminum poles plus one brow pole, so again a good stuff here as well. They create a freestanding structure when you pass them through the top sleeves on the inner tent, and attach their ends to the corner grommets. So you realize that the structure is very simple, there is no a hub element or an intersection plastic element; the poles are kept in place by the top sleeves.
This is a good piece, a full-coverage type, with vents and with two useful vestibules. Here you have the same denier as in the floor and in the walls.
You have seen in the video its star-gazing feature, shown also in the picture above, so this is something kids will love and you will use it when the weather allows. You roll it up and fix with the toggles and loops which you have there, and enjoy the views.
The inner tent
This is mainly the mesh in the upper part, with some taffeta panels as well which give some privacy when the fly is not on.
The Trail Ridge 6 is great in this respect as well. So you have an 1800 mm rating for both the fly and the floor. This is more than you will ever need for any family camping. All seams are sealed, so the protection should be guaranteed.

Summary, rating, pros & cons
In the conclusion of this Kelty Trail Ridge 6 Person Tent with Footprint review, I wish to stress again that this is a simple tent, no bells and whistles. But this is a tool designed to do the job, and it offers a full protection from elements.
Its size is not so great for the declared 6 people capacity, so use it for fewer users. All the rest is in place, the footprint is there, and the price is very reasonable. I trust the brand behind it, and I can fully recommend this tent. Please see below how I rate this tent.
Note that there is also the Trail Ridge 8 with very similar features presented here in the site. But if you need something more affordable, check this Kelty Acadia 6 which they built in the same style.
If you still need something different, this site is only about family camping tents so look around, you will find something for you. Check this Yellowstone 6 tent and Sequoia 6 tent from the same brand, and also this Core 6 Instant Cabin tent, with an express setup.
