What type of tent is this
The Avington 600XL is a typical tunnel type tent with 3 rooms and a large porch. See its floor plan and the dimensions to get some idea of what you have here:
You realize that this is a very tall structure with 210 cm along the apex, the doors are very high and the windows are huge, so all in all the tent is very livable and pleasant.
The tent is not freestanding as usual for such tunnel-type structures. The inner sleeping area is from a darker material and this is what they call ‘lights out’ design, or the dark rest. The sleeping area is a tent within the tent, so this part is a double-layer structure. The remaining living room is a single-layer shell.
Who is it for
Sizewise, the tent is with the declared capacity of 6 people. The floor plan above shows that you have the inner area of 18.2 m² (196 ft²), which means 33 ft² (3 m²) per person. But this is not all; you still have a porch with 3.8 m² (41 ft²) where you can keep lots of your camping items. So as you realize this is really huge, and this tent is a luxurious option for family camping.
Note that the living room is large and with a fully sealed floor, and I do not see any reason why several more people would not sleep there if necessary. So the tent can accommodate far more people than what the declared capacity tells you.
Seasons-wise, this is a tent designed in Scotland, so the waterproof rating is appropriate, you will see more below. This is a very reliable tent for a 3-season camping and it will keep you dry no matter the weather.
Climate-wise, I would stress again where it is designed. So bear in mind that this is a very enclosed space with PVC windows and without mesh on the ceiling. Therefore, I see it more suitable for a cooler environment than for a hot area. Also, being so enclosed, this is a nice tent to use in the area where you can expect lots of dust and sand in the air.
Weight-wise, the tent is heavy, you have 48.3 lb (21.9 kg). But the packed size is really good for such a huge tent, it packs down to 27.6 x 12.6 x 11.8 in (70 x 32 x 30 cm). So you will need a car for transportation, but it will not take much space.
Overview of features
The poles are not the best part of this tent, you have them 5 and they are fiberglass which is not particularly durable material but they use it in all tents and this has been for years already, so you should be fine with it. Note that they are pre-angled and this gives a greater internal space.
You have Vango’s Protex which is 70D polyester flysheet, and it is with an impressive waterproof rating of 4000 mm. So this is highly waterproof and quite durable fabric exclusive to Vango. The groundsheet is a polyethylene, it is fully sewn in, so the floor is fully waterproof. All seams are factory taped. Note that the inner tent has its own extra bathtub floor, which means you have a double floor layer in that part of the tent.
The upper part of the inner tent is a breathable polyester, and the divider is toggled so you can remove it if not needed. All materials are weather tested to the European standard EN5912 by a certified test center, and they are fire retardant to meet European EN5912 safety standard. The materials are dark in the sleeping area and this is the mentioned lights out design.
The doors & the windows
There are two entry doors plus two inner doors, and one of the external doors is with extra mesh layer. All the windows are in the living room and there are 4 of them, all PVC and with toggled shutters from inside, for privacy and for reduced daylight.
Tensioned band system TBSII
Being the tunnel tent, it has numerous guylines from outside for stability, but they have added also what they call the TBSII Tension Band System from inside. Those are straps that are fixed on the sides of the arches and you can pass them and fix by toggles at the highest points. This stabilizes the tent laterally in adverse conditions. When not needed, they can be stowed in the specially designed pockets on the walls.
This is a completely enclosed space and by this I mean that the floor is sewn in and the windows are solid material. So vents are important and you have them 3. Two long low vents are under the side windows in the living room, and you have Velcro stiffeners there to keep them open all the time. One large high vent is on the back behind the sleeping inner tent.
The inner doors are also with mesh sections, and one of the doors is a double-layer design where you have mesh and panel so you can keep it with mesh only for a better ventilation. Note also that the front door is deep underneath the porch so you can keep it open even if it is raining. This all together should work fine and you should not have too many issues with condensation.
- Lantern hanging points are available.
- Bedroom pockets are conveniently positioned for small items.
- You have high visibility guylines.
- The carry bag is oversized for an easy tent storage.
- A cable entry port is available.
- You also have integrated eyelets on the side door for an awning creation with some extra poles (not included).

Accessory Avington 600XL Porch Door
They sell also a porch door which fits the large porch and closes the space completely from the front. The picture shows how effective this is, you still have extra PVC windows here and the porch area is doubled because this door is angled and it extends forward. As you see, this is not just a door, you have a vestibule here as well:
Vango Avington 600 XL vs Competitors

After seeing all these features I hope you will agree with my previous statement that this Vango Avington 600XL 6 Man Family Tent is a luxurious camping tool. It is in the group of tents which provide the largest area per person. This all comes at a price, yet this is not the most expensive item on the market; you have seen the Coleman tent in the comparison table above which is far more expensive.
You might want to compare it with this Vango Marna 600 XL which is in the same style but with a fully closed porch, and also with the Vango IRIS 600 XL Tent from the same brand with 21 square meters of the area.
But if you need something more affordable of the same type, please check some other models in the category Tunnel Tents.
