The Moosejaw Comfortress 8-Person Tent is a tall family camping tent with two rooms and two doors, and with two vestibules. It is available with aluminum and fiberglass poles.
Key features & benefits
- Tunnel type tent.
- 2 Vestibules.
- 2 Rooms.
- Aluminum and fiberglass poles options.
What this is about
This Moosejaw Comfortress 8-Person Tent is a tunnel type structure with an interesting supporting frame shown in the picture below. So you have 5 separate loops and some of them cross each other so the structure is stable and strong.
Note that the peak height is impressive 78 inches (198 cm), so this is a stand up height in the central area along the main axis of the tent.
There is a full coverage fly that creates a large front vestibule/porch with two separate doors and a window, you can see them in the picture below. Note that the front flap allows for the awning setup with the help of a pair of trekking poles. With this you get extra space outside to sit in the shade.
But there is also a rear vestibule with a dual zipper so you can roll the flap and fix to the roof as in the picture. So here you have yet another rear door.
The mentioned front and rear doors on the inner tent are useful for occupants because there are two rooms created with a removable divider. So each room has its own door.
Other details
The tent comes with a cable port and a lantern hanging point, they are shown in the pictures:
There is also a removable media pocket shown below. In every corner there is a set of wall pouches, one is shown in the picture.
Materials
The poles: You have option to choose aluminum poles version or fiberglass as well, it is up to you. The poles attach to the base through sockets, and higher you have clips and sleeves. All is color-coded for an easy setup. Note that the porch has its own separate loop that adds lots of volume on the front porch area.
The fabric: They use a 75D polyester with a 1500 mm waterproof coating. This is not much but you do not need more. The floor is moderately durable, with a 150D value, and with the same rating.
Reflective guy lines are included as well as heavy-duty stainless steel tent stakes.
Ventilation
The inner tent’s canopy is mostly mesh as you have seen in the pictures above. So vapor can escape. The inner doors are also with mesh in their upper parts. So this all can create lots of cross air flow and vertical air flow.
The problem is with the fly which is massive, yet it has only one rear vent on the vestibule flap. If you want to close the doors on the porch and the vestibule, you would need far more vents to reduce condensation.

Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for up to 8 people. For this you have an inner floored area of 116 ft² (10.8 m²). This would give 14.5 ft² (1.35 m²) per person. So this capacity is determined by the number of sleeping pads that can fit on the floor. In practice, it is best to downgrade it to 4-5 people maximum.
The front vestibule adds 51 ft² (4.7 m²), so this is a lot of useful protected space for storage and for cooking. The rear vestibule is small, no information about its area, but it is good enough for shoes and boots.
Regarding seasons & climate, the tent is described as a 3-season family camping shelter and this is indeed so. The fly is massive and it offers full protection, see below how it looks with closed doors.
Observe those ground skirts in the porch and vestibule areas, this is to drain water away and also to reduce cold drafts.
The tent is tall, but the profile is smooth, and you have enough guylines to secure it against winds, so it should perform well in such conditions.
Regarding the weight, the tent is on the heavy side with its 32.5 lb (14.7 kg). So use it close to your car.
The packed size is very good, you will see the numbers below. See the carry bag, the tent fits easily in.
Regarding the price, I would say it is a bit expensive, but this is a large tent, and you have aluminum poles here. Please follow the links below to check for updates.
