The Snow Peak Land Nest Dome Medium Tent is a tunnel type 3-season two-layer structure with a large fully protected vestibule and aluminum poles.
Key features & benefits
- Tunnel type tent.
- 2 Doors.
- Inner room + huge vestibule.
- Full protection.
- Aluminum poles.
- Ventilated.
What this is about
The word Medium in the name indicates the fact that this is not the only version, they also have a smaller version as well. The structure can be described as a tunnel-type as you realize from the pictures, with three loops that support the huge full-coverage fly. So the word Dome in the name makes no much sense.
There are two doors on the tent, one is visible in the picture below is on the left. As you realize, you can roll the flap up and fix it to the loop. The shell tent is symmetric but the inner tent attaches asymmetrically underneath it, so you have a large vestibule on one side, more below.
The inner tent is shown below. It is also with two D-shaped doors that match the doors on the fly. You will see later from the floor plan that the rear side is without vestibule.
Ventilation
From the picture above you realize that the gap between the two layers is wide, so there is plenty of space for air circulation. This will reduce condensation on the underside of the shell.
They have added two roof vents, they are equipped with stiffeners. I think they are a bit small, and it would be better to have more. There are also those large triangular openings close to the ground. They are with mesh and panels, so here you can have as much ventilation from the ground as you need.
The two huge doors on the inner tent are also double layers, with zippered mesh and panels. They are fully protected underneath the shell, so you can keep them with mesh all the time if you wish. But you can also close them with zippered panels if you feel cold.
So there is almost nothing to object to this design, as usual with this brand, and ventilation is excellent.
Materials
All the elements in the package are shown in the picture:
The poles: You have thick and strong aluminum alloy poles here. This is A6061, and the diameter is 13 mm. The central loop includes two aluminum hub elements.
The poles attach to the base through grommets, and higher you have a combination of clips and sleeves. Some details you can see in this picture:
The fabric: The tent is a true double layer so you have a flysheet made of a 75D polyester taffeta with a PU coating that gives it 1800 mm waterproof rating. They claim it also has some UV protection.
The inner tent is all 68D polyester taffeta used for the canopy, and a 210D polyester oxford with PU coating used for the floor. Its rating is also 1800 mm.
Lots of details you can see in their manual. Please see a bit more also in this video:
Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for up to 4 people. They do not give the exact numbers for the area, but the floor plan is given below and you can get some idea.
The inner room (the gray area in the picture) is close to 75.3 ft² (7 m²). So in the case of 4 occupants this gives 18.8 ft² (1.75 m²) per person which is quite good.
But there is also the front vestibule which is practically a floorless room. My estimate of its area is around 50.6 ft² (4.7 m²). So the total covered and protected space here is around 126 ft² (11.7 m²) and this is huge.
Note also that the inner tent is positioned so that there is no storage space on the rear side.
You might want to know that they also offer a separate option for the inner area. You can order their inner Solo Tent and have this tent for solo use. This would create far more floorless vestibule area under the shell.
Regarding seasons & climate, the describe it as a 3-season tent. In my view, this is a tent for all seasons. It is built as a true two-layer structure with a full-taffeta inner tent and a huge fly. Waterproof rating is very good, so you are completely protected inside.
The tent is low profile, the peak height is 63 inches (160 cm), and the poles are high quality. So I have no doubt it will perform well even in very windy places.
Note also that you have external frame here. So the poles attach from outside. This may be convenient if you pitch the tent in the rain, so if the inner tent is pre-attached, it will remain protected under the fly. This is typically described as a dry setup tent.
Regarding the weight, the tent is quite heavy with its 19.2 lb (8.7 kg). But see its overall area and you will realize that its area/weight ratio is not so bad. The same holds for its packed size which is 30 x 10 x 8.3 inches (70 x 25 x 21 cm). In any case, this is a car camping tent so these parameters are not so important.
Regarding the price, this brand is known for quality products and steep prices, but this tent is a bit more affordable than their other tents. You can check for updates if you follow the link.
