What Is a Fast Pitch Tent, Hub Tent, Automatic and Quick Setup Tent Frame?

Last Modified: 06/16/2024

Various brands and tent manufacturers use different terminology for basically the same tent frame design. This may be confusing for those who are new in the outdoor activity, and the purpose of this text is to help in this regard.

The term fast pitch tent describes a construction in which the tubes in the frame are permanently interconnected creating a single piece. This means that you can never lose a pole segment, and this makes tent’s setup fast and easy.

But there are tents in which only one part of the frame can be described as fast pitch, so there are still separate poles.

In such a design there is typically one or more hub elements to which the poles converge and connect. For these reasons it is sometimes described as a hub frame and also as an automatic frame. There is also a term quick-setup tents which describes essentially the same deign.

But this all should not be mixed with instant tents or pop-up tents where the frame is permanently pre-attached to the tent. Instead, in a fast pitch design, the tent is separate from the frame.

Traditional modern tents typically also have poles with shock corded segments, but the poles are still separate from each other.

Fast Pitch Tent Designs

A fast pitch tent is a revolutionary camping shelter designed for quick and hassle-free setup. Unlike traditional tents that may require significant time and effort to assemble, fast pitch tents are engineered with innovative features to streamline the setup process.  This makes them a popular choice for campers seeking efficiency and convenience.

For many campers and outdoor enthusiasts, the task of setting up and taking down a tent can be a time-consuming and tedious endeavor. This is where fast pitch tents, or hub tents, or automatic tents come into play.

These innovative tents are designed to make setup and takedown a breeze, allowing you to spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time fussing with your shelter.

Such quick-setup tents, while not as hands-off as pop-up or instant tents, still provide a significant time savings compared to traditional tents.

The pre-attached poles and clips make setup relatively straightforward, and some models can be completed in as little as a minute or two. This makes them a great choice for families and groups, as everyone can pitch in and have the tent ready to go in no time.

The picture below shows it in the case of the Naturehike MG Hexagonal Yurt Camping Tent. The whole frame with its 6 poles together with the top hub is a single piece that packs separate from the tent that attaches to such a frame.

Benefits and Advantages of Fast Pitch Tents

Time Efficiency

The primary advantage of fast pitch tents lies in their time efficiency. The quick setup allows campers to spend less time wrestling with tent components and more time enjoying the great outdoors.

This is particularly valuable in situations where prompt shelter is needed, such as during sudden weather changes or when arriving at a campsite late in the day. These tents can be erected in minutes, allowing you to quickly get out of the elements and start enjoying your camping trip.

This is particularly beneficial for families and group camping, as it can streamline the process of getting everyone settled in.

Convenience for Beginners

Fast pitch tents are especially appealing to beginners in the camping world. The simplified setup process reduces the learning curve associated with traditional tents, making camping more accessible to those who may be new to the experience.

The frustration often linked with assembling a tent is significantly diminished, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the camping trip.

See the tent below, this is the Naturehike Village 5 Roof Automatic Tent, and all the elements in its frame are one piece, but the tent is a separate piece. Observe the word ‘automatic’ used in its name.

Choosing the Right Fast Pitch Tent

When selecting a fast pitch tent, it’s important to consider factors such as size, weight, features, and budget. Consider how many people will be using the tent and how much space you need. If you’re planning on camping in remote areas, choose a lightweight tent that’s easy to transport.

If you need additional features, such as a screened-in porch or a vestibule for storing gear, there are fast pitch tents available that offer these options. Look for tents with high-quality materials and construction that will withstand the rigors of outdoor use.

Note that there are fast pitch or hub tents of various shapes. So you will find them among dome type tents, yurt tents (the picture below), and also among cabin type tents.

In the case of cabin tents, you will see sometimes that only the roof poles are attached to one or two hub elements, while the leg poles are separate. One example of this type is the Coleman Tenaya Lake Fast Pitch Tent series, they have it for 6 and for 8 people, see the picture below with the roof hub element and roof poles:

Comparison of Different Models

To assist in choosing the right fast pitch tent, it’s essential to compare various models. Consider factors such as size, weight, setup mechanism, and additional features. Customer reviews and ratings provide valuable insights into the real-world performance and satisfaction levels with specific models.

Note that there is a big difference in comfort and livability between cabin type tents and dome tents. The former typically offer far more headroom, views around through their numerous windows, and also a very good ventilation. But dome type tents may be more appropriate for windy places because of their lower and aerodynamic profile.

Additional Considerations

While fast pitch tents offer many advantages, there are a few potential drawbacks to consider. Some models may have limited ventilation, which can lead to condensation buildup and discomfort. Additionally, sometimes hub or automatic tents tend to be more expensive than traditional tents.

Consideration of Camping Needs

Before purchasing a fast pitch tent, campers should assess their specific needs and preferences. Consider factors such as the number of occupants, desired comfort levels, and the expected environmental conditions. This thoughtful consideration ensures that the chosen tent aligns with individual camping requirements.

Think also about extra features like a screen room that you have in the tent below, the Coleman 6-Person Steel Creek Fast Pitch Tent.

Frame Material

You have seen the Naturehike tents above, so just to know that the frame in these tents is a quality aluminum alloy. But this is why these tents are more expensive that those from Coleman where you typically have fiberglass used on the roof. The latter is usually a more budget friendly option, just to know.

Maintenance and Care

Proper maintenance is crucial to extending the lifespan of a fast pitch tent. This includes storing the tent in a dry and cool place, cleaning it after each use, and addressing any issues promptly. Following manufacturer guidelines for care and maintenance helps ensure that the tent remains a reliable companion on future camping adventures.

Conclusion

Fast pitch tents, or hub tents, or automatic tents, or quick-setup tents describe basically the same design. They offer a convenient and efficient solution for campers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to get into the outdoors quickly and easily. Their quick setup and takedown make them a popular choice for families, groups, and individuals seeking a hassle-free shelter experience.

The advantages of time efficiency and convenience for beginners is the reason for their popularity among outdoor enthusiasts. As camping technology continues to evolve, such fast pitch tents stand out as a practical and efficient option for those seeking a seamless camping experience.
