What this Coleman Spruce Falls 4 Person Family Tent is about
This Colemans Spruce Falls 4 has been around for several years already, and this is an awarded design. You have an extended dome tent with a central area under two X-crossed poles, and extensions on the sides supported by extra loops.
There are two inner tents in those extensions, and they are with their own sewn-in and sealed floors. The central living room is with a linked-in floor. So this is a practical face-to-face construction with the best possible privacy that you can have in a tent. The picture below shows its floor plan and some dimensions.
So I would describe it as a tent with a full-coverage fly and a 3-room type, although the manufacturer describes it as a 2-room tent. This is probably because the central living area has no full protection from crawling insects.
In any case, you can keep the inner tents attached when you pack the tent. So when you pitch it next time, you have a dry-setup if you are forced to pitch the tent in the rain.
The tent is very tall and you have a stand-up height in the living area. Note that there is only one door so the floor plan above is a bit inaccurate. On the opposite side in the living room you have a large solid window with an inner shutter for privacy.
They describe it as freestanding but this is definitely not so. The extensions must be staked down properly.
BlackOut tent
Coleman is one of the best known brands that build dark rest tents. They call this BlackOut design, and the meaning is that the inner sleeping cabins block up to 99% of the light. You will not find something darker on the market.
Temperature control: They claim that the temperature during the day may be 5 degrees lower in the inner tents. In the evening it is supposed to be for one degree warmer inside (at least for a while), and the reason is the warm air that is trapped between the inner and outer layers.
So you have a dark and cool place to sleep even during the day. This may be suitable for families with small kids. This is why I have included it in my list of best dark rest tents.
Materials
The poles: This large tent is supported by 4 shock-corded fiberglass poles. The attachment at the base is with the usual pin and ring elements, and on the canopy you have clips and sleeves.
The fabric: The fabric is a polyester and it comes with an impressive 4500 mm waterproof rating. All seams are taped. The inner tents are also a breathable polyester.
They claim that the entire tent is equipped with an UVGuard technology with 50+ protection against the UV rays. The material is also fire-retardant. The floor is a thick and waterproof bathtub style polyethylene.
Other details
- You have several pockets inside the tent for storage of small items.
- A lantern hanging hook is available.
- Plenty of reflective guylines, and stakes are included.
Ventilation
The tent is equipped with two roof vents, they are under the small fly cap on the top of the central dome. There are also two high vents on the narrow sides of the tent, behind the inner tents.
The inner tents are a breathable material and their doors are with mesh on the upper sections. There are no floor vents, but this is probably because the central room is with a linked-in floor so you have enough air circulation.

Who is this tent for
Regarding the area, this tent offers 5.88 square meters in its sleeping rooms, plus 4.1 square meters in the living room. Note that the sleeping rooms are 1.4 meters wide so this is a generous space. The official capacity is 4 people, so this is plenty of space for sleeping and for your camping gear. The inner area is the same as in the Eurohike Genus 400 Air Tent.
Regarding seasons & climate, the tent is with a high waterproof rating, and the inner tents are fully protected under its huge shell. So I see it as a great 3-season-plus tent. The structure is tall, and there is that small cap on the top, see the picture, so I would rather avoid very windy places.
Regarding the weight, this is a heavy tent, it weighs 31.7 lb (14.4 kg). But it is large and tall so the weight makes sense. The packed size is very good, it measures 23.2 x 10.2 x 9.4 in (59 x 26 x 24 cm). So you can transport it even on a motorbike.
Regarding the price, I would say it is fair for such a nicely built and feature rich tent.
