What this is about
The long official name of this Coleman Valdes Deluxe 4 XL Air BlackOut Bedroom Family Tent is quite descriptive. The word Air tells you that the support is through air beams, there are no solid poles here.
It comes with a manual pump included so you inflate the beams one by one. One person can do the job easily. This is what they call the FastPitch design.
The tent is tunnel shaped, so you have a fully enclosed and sealed shell tent, and inside there is an inner tent with two separate sleeping units. The front part is a large living room. You can see these details in the floor plan below.
So it can be described as a 3-room shelter, but note that it has a front porch or vestibule that is fully closable as shown in the picture below. So this is yet another floorless room where you can keep your gear and use the space for cooking as well.
Doors and windows
The tent has two large doors. The side door is shown in the picture below, and as you realize it has a brim supported with a short solid pole. With this you have a dry entry point, a great feature to have when it rains.
The front door is shown below, it is completely protected under the porch, so this is again a dry entry:
Note that this main door comes with a convenient drop-down design, see the picture. This is great to have with kids running around, and also for people that use wheelchairs.
The doors on the inner tent are with mesh on the upper parts, they are visible in the picture above. Below you can see how the front looks when both the porch and the door underneath the porch are closed:
Note that the windows are solid, and they are equipped with inner shatters for privacy, one is shown in the picture:
Dark rest design
This is about the word BlackOut in the name. So the inner tent is made of a dark material, and specially designed to block daylight.
They claim it blocks up to 99% of light from entering the sleeping space. In addition, they write that it keeps the tent 5°C cooler during the day and 1°C warmer at night.
So this is again a feature great to have if you camp with kids who must take a nap during the day, and you can also sleep longer in the morning.
Coleman as a brand is the leading manufacturer of this type of tents, you will see them many among dark rest tents here in the site.
Materials
The fabric: The inner tent is made of a breathable polyester, and its floor is also a PU coated polyester. The mesh areas are a no-see-um mesh.
The shell is a polyester with an impressive 4500 mm waterproof rating. This design they call the WeatherTec, all seams are taped, and this is a fire-retardant material and with UV protection
The groundsheet material is a fully waterproof polyethylene, and it is fully sewn-in to protect the tent interior from bugs and water.
You also have a full set of stakes, guylines, and also storm straps on the front and on the back.
Ventilation
The shell tent has no mesh windows, so this is why you have a full set of vents. They include:
- Three large roof vents, one next to the side door and two on the opposite side (these are shown in the picture).
- One floor vent opposite to the side door.
- One large rear vent, see the picture:

Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for 4 people. But the letters XL in the name indicate that you have lots of space here. Indeed, the sleeping area is 6 m², and the living room offers 8.4 m² of a fully protected space. So if needed, at least 4 more people can sleep there as well.
But this is not all. You also have 4.6 m² under the porch, and this space is also closable so your gear can be stored there. This space you can use for sitting and cooking.
Regarding seasons & climate, this tent is clearly for all seasons and climates. It can be fully closed when you feel cold, and you have plenty of venting options if you use it in a warm environment. But I see it better suited for a cooler environment.
The materials are with a huge waterproof rating so you are protected from the elements. Numerous guylines and storm straps will secure it in windy conditions. Air beams can never break, they restore their shape instantly when wind pressure drops.
Regarding the weight, this is is a heavy tent, it weighs 67 lb (30.4 kg). But this is justified for such a large structure. Note that the carry bag is with wheels.
The packed size is also not its best feature, see the picture below. The carry bag is made of polyester.
Regarding the price, the tent is expensive, but this is a quality product and you have several links below to compare the prices.
