DOD Outdoors One Pole Tent – a Large Modern Two-Layer Teepee (Tipi)

Last Modified: 03/02/2024

The DOD Outdoors One Pole Tent Large is a very compact and light modern version of a teepee (tipi) tent, and this means one central pole that supports its two-layer canopy, plus a sewn-in and sealed floor.

Key features & benefits

  • Teepee (tipi) shape tent.
  • Two-layers.
  • Huge official waterproof rating.
  • Very compact.
  • Lightweight.
  • Reasonable price.

Overview

So here you have a tent from a well-known Japanese brand, and you will see it at some places under the name DoD Ichi One Pole Tent. This is a true double-layer tent that includes an inner mesh canopy that is seamed with a bathtub floor as shown in the picture below. Observe the two zippered doors on the canopy.

The structure is supported with a single central pole, so it is not freestanding and you have to stake it down properly before adding the pole. The height is impressive 10 feet (3 meters) and this is why I have included it in my list of very tall tents.

Awning configuration

The second layer here is a full-coverage fly with two doors, one shown below. Because of its dual side zippers, it allows for an awning setup shown in the picture, but note that the awning poles are not included.

Materials

The pole: You have only one strong steel pole. The top of the inner tent is with a reinforced cap where the pole fits. A reinforced patch on the floor is the place where you put the pole’s foot.

The fabric: The fly and the floor are made of the same 150D polyester, it is durable and strong. But you have 2000 mm PU coating on the fly and 4000 mm on the floor, though on Amazon you will see 5000 mm mentioned.

Ventilation

The inner tent is all mesh as you have already seen. To deal with vapor, they have added several vents on the fly. It is important to stress that you have to open them before you raise the tent with the pole, with its 3 meters height you will not be able to do this later.

Who is this DoD Ichi One Pole Tent for

What size is it? What about its capacity?

This DOD Outdoors One Pole Tent is built in three different sizes, small, medium, and large, and they are suitable for 3, 5, and 8 people, respectively. The focus of this text is on the largest of the them because this site is about family size camping tents, but you will see the numbers below for all of them.

All three versions are built in the same teepee (tipi) style, but there are differences regarding the doors. The DOD One Pole Tent Large is with two doors that have dual zippers on the sides to create awning as described above.

The other two smaller versions are with one door only, and the door flap can be rolled to the side, so this is not a design for an awning.

The pictures below show the floor plans and dimensions for all three of them, just to compare and in the case that the Large option is too big for you.

From the picture above you can see what the brand suggests for using the floor in the case of 8 occupants. Note that the actual octagonal floored area is only inside the inner tent, and this is marked with the dashed line in the floor plan. So this is well below the octagon 15-feet area.

Each of its external side lengths is 190 cm but the inner tent side length is at least 20 cm shorter. So my estimate is that you have below 16 square meters (172 ft²) here, but this is still a lot.

Per person, this would mean around 2 square meters (21.5 ft²). However, note that the volume is reduced by its angled roof, as usual for a tipi tent.

Below are the sizes for the other two versions, observe that the base is hexagonal in both.

How many seasons?

Regarding seasons & climate, they describe it as a 3-season tent and this is true. The tent is with a high waterproof rating and it is also with ventilation typical for such a design. If you feel cold, the tent is fully closable as shown in the picture below.

View with the closed door.
View with the closed door.

You also have enough ropes and stakes to secure it to the ground. Note that I have seen some videos with testing it in the rain and one of them did leak. This is why it is best to test it in a controlled situation at home. You have a reliable brand here and let them know in the case of issues of that type.

The tent is tall but with a huge base, and its proportions are excellent. With the included ropes it should work well in most situations in a 3-season camping.

Regarding the weight, in view of its overall size the tent can be described as very light, you will see below how I rate its L version. But indeed, it weighs 26.5 lb (12 kg), so do no plan to carry it far from the car.

The packed size is simply excellent for its size, see the numbers below, so it can be described as ultra compact. The carry bag is from the same polyester, and you can see it below.

Regarding the price, I would say that the L version is a bit pricy. The M and S versions look far more affordable, below you have several options to check for the price updates.

They have several extra pieces that you can order separately and upgrade your camping experience with this tent. Here are the most important of them:

DoD Ichi Mat

So this is something to put inside on the floor of the inner tent. See how it looks:

DoD Ichi Mat.
DoD Ichi Mat.
  • This mat is specifically tailored for the Ichi One Pole Tent series, so you have them in all three sizes.
  • It is 0.25-inch thick for cushioning to smoothen out rough terrains and for extra insulation from the ground.
  • The mat is made from a high-strength water-resistant fabric.
  • It comes with a handy carry bag for easy transport and storage.

You can order it at DoD Outdoors. Observe that they sell it also as a bundle together with their Ichi One Pole Ground Sheet shown in the picture:

Dod Sugoi Chair

You have seen it in the pictures above. This is a chair that I have myself and I take it regularly with me on my car tours in the mountains. You can read more about it in my full review.

DoD Soto Sleeping Pad

This is yet another product from the DoD brand that I use myself, and excellent self-inflating and thick car-camping sleeping pad. You can read about it in my review.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In conclusion, the DOD Outdoors One Pole Tent Large presents a compelling option for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a modern and efficient teepee-style tent.

Its single central pole supporting a two-layer canopy with a sewn-in and sealed floor offers a unique combination of compactness and lightness. The teepee shape, with its impressive 10-foot height, not only provides ample space but also allows for a versatile awning configuration using the dual side-zippered doors on the fly.

Catering to different group sizes, the One Pole Tent is available in small, medium, and large sizes, accommodating 3, 5, and 8 people, respectively. The large version, with its dual doors and awning setup, stands out for family camping.

Despite its lightweight and ultra-compact nature, the tent boasts a robust build with a high waterproof rating and adequate ventilation for 3-season camping.

The inclusion of optional accessories, such as the DoD Ichi Mat and Sugoi Chair, further enhances the camping experience.

While the tent may be considered slightly expensive, its unique features, compactness, and reliable performance make it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a quality outdoor shelter. I have included it in my list of best tipi tents.

Below you can see how the One Pole Tent Large stands against my standard rating criteria that I apply consistently to all of them here in the site so that you can easily compare:
