Overview
This OLPRO Wichenford 8 Berth Family Camping Tunnel Tent is what its official long name suggests, a huge tunnel-shaped construction with two inner tents within the shell tent. It has been on the market for a number of years already, and it has been improved, so this is the version 3.
The picture below shows its floor plan and some dimensions so you can get some idea of what it offers.
So you have a shell tent which is with a fully sewn-in and sealed floor, and you can use it even without inner tents. This may be suitable for some family events in the garden or for camping as well. See below how it looks without the inner tents:
The inner tents are also with their sewn-in and sealed bathtub floors. So the bedrooms are with two waterproof layers on the ground, see how this looks:
The divider in one of the inner tents is little more than a curtain, so do not expect lots of privacy. But observe that the inner tents are on the opposite sides of the central living area. So this is a design suitable for two couples.
So this is a modular design and you can use it in several different room configurations. This means i) with or without one or both of its inner tents, and ii) with and without the room divider in one of its inner tents. As you realize, you have quite a number of options to organize the inner space, and to make the living area larger or smaller.
You have a stand-up height in almost every part of the tent, the peak height is 82.7 inches (210 cm). There are 2 doors on the shell tent and 4 inner tents’ doors. You can even create an awning with a pair of poles that are included in the package, the picture shows how this looks.
The living area has two large windows with panels for protection and privacy. The picture below shows how pleasant this part of the tent is.
Other features include numerous storage pouches (see them on the inner wall in the picture above), there is also a lantern hanging point, and you have an E-cable port on the side as well.
Materials
The poles: The tent is supported by 5 long loops with shock-corded segments, and this is fiberglass. This material is commonly used in budget friendly tents. It needs a careful handling. The previously mentioned awning poles are steel.
The fabric: The fabric is a ripstop polyester, so this is what makes this 3.0 version stronger than the version 2.0. It has a 5000mm waterproof rating and you will never need more. But this is a large tent with many seams, so it is best to test it in controlled conditions before going for camping.
Ventilation
For a tunnel-type tent, you have an excellent ventilation here. Both external doors are with a full-size zippered mesh plus a zipper panel, and the inner doors are with mesh in their upper sections.
But they have added plenty of roof vents, you have them 6 in total on the longer sides, and one on both narrow sides behind the inner tents. Some of them are visible in the picture below. But there are no floor vents, they are necessary if you have to keep the doors closed with panels when it rains.
In this video you can see how to set this tent up:
Who is this tent for
Regarding the area, they do not provide official numbers, the dimensions are known but it is not exactly rectangular. I would say you have around 205 ft² (19 m²) in all its rooms. The official capacity is 8 people, and the inner tents are such that they can easily accommodate 8 sleeping pads on the ground. Each of them measures 2.8 x 2.1 m.
The living room dimensions are 3 x 2.6 m, so there you have 84 ft² (7.8 m²). This means per person you have around 25.6 ft² (2.37 m²) and this is more than enough. If necessary, the living room can accommodate 4 people more. I have included it in my list of extra large family camping tents.
Regarding seasons & climate, on Amazon-UK they write it is for summer camping. This is hard to understand, the tent can surely be used as a 3-season camping shelter.
It is fully closable if you feel cold, and when the sky is clear you will have as much ventilation as you want. The tent is large and tall but if you orient it properly regarding the wind direction, it will perform well.
Regarding the weight, this is is a heavy tent with its 61.7 lb (28 kg), but see again its floor area and its overall size. The packed size is 27.6 x 15.7 x 15.7 inches (70 x 40 x 40 cm) and this is quite good for such a large tent. In any case, this is a car camping shelter.
Regarding the price, I would say it more or less fair for such a huge tent. But there are more affordable options on the market, you can check among Coleman tents here in the site.
