What this is about
This Browning Camping Big Horn 5 Tent Plus Screen Room should not be mixed with their Browning Camping Big Horn 5 Tent which is also described here in the site. They do not have many tents on the market, but they are all remarkable.
What you have here is a cabin style tent with very steep and straight walls. The picture below shows the tent without the fly so you get the idea about its shape.
The tent is very tall, you would not say from the pictures, but the peak height is incredible 90 inches (229 cm). So you have a stand-up height practically everywhere. This is why it is included in my list of extra tall family camping tents.
The rooms
The tent has two different spaces. One is on the front shown in the pictures below. This is a floorless area with a central zipper so you can open it completely.
But this area has panels on the walls so you have full protection from the elements. You can call it a screen room as they suggest in the official name of the tent. I have a separate list of tents with a creen porch but such screen areas in my list are not protected from the rain. The screen area here is more than that.
In these pictures you can also partly see the inner room or back room with its inner door. So this is a floored area, and it has yet another door on the opposite side, it is shown below. So the tent has two doors. When without the fly, the tent is fully freestanding.
The fly is a partial coverage type, it fully protects the back room. But it also creates a large vestibule shown in the picture below. This is an area which you can use in various ways.
This vestibule flap is with two side zippers so you can roll it up and keep out of way. But you can also roll up the side walls of the fly and have views around when the sky is clear. These configurations are shown in the pictures below.
Note that the inner room has 3 windows on the sides, and you have them also in the screen room of course.
Awning configurations on the rear side
With the vestibule flap you can create awnings shown in the pictures. This extends the tent outside and you have a pleasant shade for sitting. Note that the two awning poles are aluminum and they are included:
Here are a few more pictures that show the inner space:
Materials
The poles: You have already seen about the awning poles, so their diameter is 19 mm. The tent is supported with steel legs 19 mm in the diameter, and the roof poles are fiberglass 12.5 mm diameter.
The fabric: The fly is a 75D 185T polyester with factory sealed seams. They claim it resists UV damage and stays taut. The floor is also polyester but 150D and with 2000 mm coating. I did not see the number for the fly, it could be the same.
Other details
- Mesh storage pockets.
- Gear loft.
- Steel stakes and guy ropes included.
- Footprint: you can use the one from the earlier mentioned Big Horn 5 tent, they have the same floor size. You can buy two and use one as a removable floor in the screen room. You can also buy their Browning Camping Big Horn Two-Room Footprint and put it under both areas here.
Ventilation
The tent has many mesh windows on all its sides, and the roof is also mesh. There are no fly vents, but you have seen how the fly looks above the screen room, vapor can escape on all three sides. As you have seen, the vestibule can be rolled up for extra ventilation.
But there are no floor vents, pity they did not add one. Of course, you can keep the inner door open as it is fully protected, but then you invite crawling insects inside. The inner door has mesh only on the upper part.
Who is it for
Regarding the area, the tent is officially for 5 people. So let’s see what you have. The inner floored room offers 80 ft² (7.4 m²), so this gives 16 ft² (1.48 m²) per person. Its dimensions are such that you can indeed put 5 sleeping pads on the floor.
But there is also the floorless screen room with full protection from the elements, its size is the same as in the inner room. So this is plenty of space to use as your living room.
Wait, this is not all. There is still the mentioned useful vestibule with its 26 ft² (2.4 m²). It is 40 inches (102 cm) deep so you can store lots of stuff there.
Now you realize why my rating for the area is high, see more below. The awning does not enter these numbers, but see how much covered space you have:
Regarding seasons & climate, they describe it as a 3-season tent and there is no doubt this is so, perhaps even more than that. This is a stable and strong structure, but very tall, perhaps not best suited for strong winds.
Regarding the weight, with its 39 lb 8 oz (17.9 kg), this is a really heavy tent. But note that its total protected area is 186 ft² (17.2 m²), and the tent is also incredibly tall.
The packed size is 29 x 12 x 12 inches (74 x 30 x 30 cm), so this looks bulky. But here again, see its overall size. In any case this is a car camping item and you would not want to carry it anywhere.

I’m about 5 ft 1 in and wondering how difficult it would be to get the fly on top of this huge tent. It seems to be exactly what I’m looking for. Do you think this will be an issue for me?
JV says
If you have somebody to help with the fly this will not be a problem. For one person it may be complicated.

Thanks for the feedback.
Jenny Garcia says
Does this tent have “tub like” floors? And you mentioned there are no floor vents, would you say this tent is still well ventilated?
JV says
Hi yes it is tub like. Floor vents are essential when it rains so you have to keep the windows with panels. But you have one inner door that is protected under the front screen room and the other is under the vestibule, and you can keep them open and still create air circulation. So yes ventilation should be fine here.
CLAUDIA says
Does the screened room of this tent stake down along the walls and door at multiple points? Could a dog easily go under a wall and escape? Do the walls flap freely in the wind?
JV says
There are stakes in the corners. In your case camping with a dog perhaps it is better to go for a floored screen room, you have them here.
As for the walls flapping in the wind, every tent will flap in the wind. But this is far less in canvas tents with their thick fabric.
