- Dome-type tent.
- Full-coverage fly.
- 1 Door & 1 vestibule.
- Fiberglass poles.
- Freestanding.
- Great price.
What this is about
The Coleman Skydome series is becoming the largest of this brand, with several sub-series that include tents with a partial coverage fly, dark-rest tents, even tents with a screen room, and now also these tents with a full fly. So what you have here is the largest in this sub-series with a full fly, they also have versions for 2 and for 4 people.
This is a dome tent shown below, and it has one door only. However, as you realize, the poles are pre-bent and they claim that this adds 20% more shoulder volume and improves livability of this tent. So the walls are steep and it looks almost like a cabin tent.
The tent is freestanding, and this holds with and without the fly, so you can set it up anywhere. The full-coverage fly creates a very useful and large vestibule (numbers are given below), so you can use it for cooking and to store your gear.
Observe that there is an extra loop that supports the vestibule and creates an awning. The vestibule flap is with two zippers on the sides, and you can roll it up and fixed above the door as in the picture:
The door is deep under the vestibule so you can have plenty of air through its upper section with mesh. The tent is moderately tall with its 72 inches (183 cm) peak height.
This is a collapsible structure and all its elements are shown in the picture below. Note that you have a full set of stakes to secure the tent. There is a gear loft and a welcome mat included, you can see them in the picture.
Ventilation
In the picture above which shows the tent without the fly, you can see that it has large mesh sections on the canopy. There is also a mesh window on the door. They have added fly vents to allow vapor to escape.
But when you have the fly on and vestibule closed, you would want to have a floor vent, pity that they missed adding it here.
Materials
The poles: The picture above shows the poles, so you have them three, they are color-coded and shock-corded. Note that this is fiberglass, this material is commonly used in budget tents, and you can find it even in very expensive tents on the market.
The fabric: You have a strong bathtub polyethylene floor. This is a highly waterproof material with welded corners. There is no information about waterproof rating of the fly. On Amazon they write this is nylon, but I am not sure about this. They use their standard WeatherTec system with inverted and taped seams.
There is an E-cable port shown above, and you can also see how the fly attaches to the tent’s base. The carry bag is expandable for an easy use, see how it looks:
Please see a bit more in this short video, it shows how to set this tent up:
Who is this tent for
Regarding seasons & climate, the tent is built as a true double-layer 3-season shelter. With such a fly you should be protected in any environment. But it is disappointing that they do not provide information about waterproof rating. Being without floor vents, the tent is not so great for a warm and rainy climate.
But the shape is aerodynamic and it should perform well in windy conditions. They claim it can withstand winds of up 35 mph.
Regarding the capacity, the tent is officially for up to 6 people. For this you have the floored area of 85 ft² (7.9 m²). This would mean 14.17 ft² (1.3 m²) per person. This is almost the same as in this REI Co-op Skyward 6 Tent.
This is not much, but the vestibule adds 40 ft² (3.7 m²) so the total protected area is 125 ft² (11.6 m²) and this is far from bad. In any case, I think it is best to downgrade the number of users to maximum 3 or 4.
Regarding the weight, the tent is moderately heavy, it weighs 19 lb 5.4 oz (8.77 kg). The packed size is 27 x 10 x 10 inches (69 x 25 x 25 cm). So these numbers are fine if you use it as a car camping tent.
Regarding the price, I would say it is fair for such a tent, a good value for the money.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons
In summary, this Coleman Skydome 6 Tent with full fly and vestibule is one of the best in their Skydome series that includes many different variants. This is mainly because of its full coverage fly for protection, and its vestibule that offers lots of space for storage. The tent is in my list of best Coleman 6 person family camping tents.
