What this is about
This Kodiak Canvas 8-Person Cabin Lodge Tent is currently the largest tent of this brand, an impressive cabin-type structure with completely vertical walls.
The picture below shows its height, so you realize you have a stand-up height in the central area where the peak height is 229 cm. This is why I have included it in my list of very tall camping tents.
The tent is a square-shaped single-room shelter with double-layer windows on all its sides, and one door. Their positions are shown in the picture below.
Stove Jack
The tent comes with an integrated stove jack on the roof and a flap equipped with zippers on the sides. The picture below shows how the flap is rolled up above the opening and this is how you keep it secured when the stove pipe is in place.
Here you have a heat-resistant silicone ring in place so all is ready for a wood-burning tent stove. Note that the diameter of the opening is 5 inches (12.7 cm). Because of this feature, the tent is in my list of tents with a stove jack.
Note that they recommended Colorado Cylinder Stoves to use with this tent.
Materials
You have all premium materials here, and craftsmanship of this tent is on a very high level.
Zippers: All zippers are YKK, so you can hardly have anything better; they include #10 coil on door, #8 coil on windows.
The poles: You have a galvanized steel tubing, 16 poles in total. They include 14 upright poles, one chock-corded three-segment ridge pole, and one roof support inner pole which you do not have to use all the time (the number 5 in the picture below).
The poles attach to the base through pin-and-ring systems, and you also have hook-an-loop tabs higher up and loops as well. Some of the poles are with tips on the top and those go through strong receiving ring on the perimeter of the roof. The main ridge pole goes through a long top sleeve.
The fabric: This is what they call the Hydra-Shield material, and this is a 100% cotton duck canvas. It is very durable, watertight, and breathable. The ceiling material is a 10 oz fabric and the walls are 8.5 oz.
All critical places around poles attachment are strongly reinforced, and the tent is with double stitching in general. The windows are with a no-see-um mesh.
The floor is a catenary-cut synthetic 13.5 oz vinyl reinforced with polyester and with welded seams. So this is a very thick and completely waterproof material.
Other details
- Under each of its 7 windows, you have attached mech pouches to keep your small items off-ground and to stay organized.
- There is a removable mesh pouch that can be attached under the roof, and here you can put a CO2 smoke detector.
- Stainless steel, wire stake loops.
- Heavy-duty, 12-inch steel rod, tent stakes.
- There are rings underneath the roof to pass a cord and to hang your clothing.
- A zippered storage bag is included.
- There are two groups of guy ropes, so use the thicker ones for the two main support poles, they are the longest in the package.
Ventilation
The tent’s fabric is naturally breathable, but as mentioned above, all the windows are with mesh for extra ventilation when the sky is clear.
A covered storm window is added on one side (see the picture below), it is equipped with a large flap that can be staked out so the window can be kept with mesh for ventilation even during the rain.
They have added two small zippered roof vents on the front and on the rear sides.
Optional vestibule
They call it optional awning, but when you see the picture you realize this is a fully protected space that looks like a large floorless room. Note that the tent has a long zipper on the front, plus Velcro tabs for the attachment of this front room.
This is a versatile addition, you can use only its roof (hence the word ‘awning’ they use), but you can also zip up the included side walls as in the picture.
The fabric is the same as the rest of the tent, and the same holds for its frame. The base measures 8 x 8 ft (244 x 244 cm), so this adds around 6 square meters of protected space. As you see from the picture, the peak height is the same.
You have here 6 zippered windows with no-see-um mesh and panels, and a zippered entry. The weight is 46.3 lb (21 kg). You can order it here.
In this video you can see how it performed in a snow storm, together with the front room, and with a wood burning stove inside:
Who is it for
Regarding the area, the official capacity is 8 person (4 person when a stove is used). For this you have 146.4 ft² (13.4 m²) of the floored area, and this would mean 18 ft² (1.67 m²) per person.
Regarding seasons & climate, there is no doubt this tent can be used year-round and in all climates and weather conditions. It is fully closable to protect you in the case of a cold weather camping.
But they have a statement that it is not for extreme winter mountaineering or very heavy snow accumulations. This is simply because of it large and not very steep roof, so there may be sagging of the roof in the case of a heavy snow on it.
Regarding the weight, this is is a heavy structure that weighs 97 lb (44 kg). So make sure you do not plan to carry it long distances from your vehicle.
The packed size is also not its best feature, you will see the numbers below. You will need lots of space in the car.
Regarding the price, the tent is expensive, but this is a high quality product designed to be used for many years.
