Kelty Wireless Tent 6 Person (2 Doors & 2 Vestibules)

Last Modified: 12/03/2023

Kelty Wireless Tent 6 Person is a simple dome structure with 2 doors and 2 vestibules. Its full fly provides complete protection and this is a reliable 3-season camping tent.

Key features & benefits

  • 2 Doors.
  • 2 Vestibules.
  • Freestanding.
  • Quick Corners design.
  • Hybrid fiberglass poles.

What type of tent is this Kelty Wireless 6

This Wireless 6 is the largest tent in a completely new series which this brand launched recently. So this is a dome type freestanding tent with a full-coverage fly. The picture below shows its simple frame that supports the tent.

This is how it looks without the fly.
This is how it looks without the fly.

This is a functional tent with 2 doors and 2 vestibules, so it gives as much protected space as you can expect from such a design. Note also that this is a very tall tent for a dome structure, with a peak height of 76 inches (193 cm).

You have a full fly here and the protection against the elements is guaranteed, this is why I have added it to our list of best tents with a full coverage fly.

Ventilation

The upper area of the inner tent is all mesh as you realize from the picture above. The fly is with two vents located on the vestibules. Note however that the lower walls are a waterproof material and I miss some floor vents here. But you can keep the inner doors partly unzipped if you need some fresh air, so this all should work fine if you use the tent in the warm climate.

Who is it for

Space-wise, with its inner area of 87.2 ft² (8.1 m²), this tent is small for its declared 6-person capacity. The picture below shows what the manufacturer suggests for using the floor area.

There are two symmetrical vestibules that add 32 ft² (3 m²) of the covered area in total, so, all in all, you still have enough protected space for gear and for such a number of users.

The floor plan.
The floor plan.

So the inner area is the same as in their Kelty Tallboy 6 tent, but here in this Wireless 6 tent you have two vestibules as well.

Climate-wise & seasons-wise, this is a true 3-season tent with a decent waterproof rating, and an aerodynamic structure so it will work well no matter where you use it. As mentioned above, there are no floor vents but you have them on the fly, and you can keep the inner door open if you feel warm and need fresh air.

Weight-wise, with its 17 lb 3 oz (7.8 kg) the tent is moderately light, but this is not an item for the trail. If this is what you need in this size range, check our list with backpacking 6-person tents.

The packed size is not bad at all, it is such that you can transport it even on a bicycle and a motorbike, see the tent in the carry bag:

Materials

The poles

This tent comes with two main poles that create its dome, plus a cross pole that pulls the sides up and makes the doors vertical. This is fiberglass, but they claim this is a special wrapped fiberglass design that is supposed to make them much stronger than standard poles of this material.

One interesting detail they added here is what they call the Quick Corners construction. This is unique to Kelty and they introduced it in 2019 in several of their new series. The picture below shows what this means.

So you have sleeves in the corners instead of the usual grommets or pin-and-ring elements. Such a sleeve keeps one end of the pole secure as you move to insert the other end, and it cannot jump out.

The fabric

The floor is a durable 68D PU-coated polyester with an 1800 mm waterproof rating. The same material is used for the fly but the rating is 1200 mm. The walls are also a 68D polyester with 1800 mm and 40D No-see-um Mesh. So these are good materials and a decent rating, you will never need more. All seams are taped.

Other features

  • Kelty’s Shark Mouth stuff sack is included, you have seen it above. The dimensions are 27 x 8 x 8 inches (69 x 20 x 20 cm).
  • Night light pocket is on the ceiling, see the picture below.

Thanks for the review on the Wireless 6. Does it have gear pockets on the inside, or just the night light pockets? How many pockets total?

    Thanks!

I am in the mountains right now and cannot check, as far as I remember there are no other pockets.

Thanks for the response. I found a review saying it had gear pockets in each corner, so I bought one. Two of the light pockets in opposite corners, and a gear pocket in each corner.
I was going to send you a picture, but I forgot before I took it down…

Thank you Bill, my Internet connection is very bad, I am in the Italian Alps and hardly managed to log in after many attempts to approve your comment. I really appreciate your information.

Pretty sure you’re showing the wireless 2 person tent and I know for a fact it isn’t the 6 person tent. The 6 has two nightlight pockets on the sides by the doors and has three clips per pole instead of the two shown. Sides are also more vertical.

I know because mine just arrived today and I set it up in the living room. Poles are heavy and I wish they were aluminum like my Grand Mesa 4 for the lightness as well as the slip joints are built into the pole on the Grand mesa. Makes adjusting the clips easier as they can slide any which way and not get hung up.

Hi Trav, yes you are right of course, the pictures are now corrected, many thanks indeed. The poles are what they call the wrapped fiberglass so they are heavy. The Grand Mesa 4 is less than half the weight of this Wireless 6 tent. But it is appropriate to compare the 4-person versions, so Wireless 4 is 5.4 kg and it has 5.5 square meters as compared to 3.37 kg and 5.1 square meters in the Grand Mesa 4. The fabric is practically the same, so the weight difference is mainly due to the poles.
