What would be the best 6 person family camping tent for 2018? Here I argue that there is no way to make a unique ranking list, there are various types that cannot be compared and this is in particular in this 6-person size range which includes so many different types of tents.
What types of tents you can expect
If you look around on this site, you will realize that this particular group of 6-person family camping tents includes a plethora of very different designs. These include:
- Dome type tents.
- Extended dome type tents.
- Instant tents.
- Cabin type tents.
- Instant cabin type tents.
- Tunnel shaped tents.
- Screened tents. These include either a floorless screened porch or a floored screened room.
- 3-room tents.
- 2-room rents.
- Single room tents.
- Air-beam tents. These tents have been around for some time already, but this industry has been growing recently.
- Winter or cold weather tents. The meaning should be obvious.
- Insulated tents. This is a special sort, designed both for cold weather and for ordinary 3-season use.
- Dark rest tents. This is a new trend in the family camping tents industry.
- Tents designed for a wood stove. Yes, you are reading correctly, and you will see the best example of this type below.
The meaning of many of these types should be obvious, but you can read more about the cabin type tents in my separate text. The instant cabin tents are described in this text. As for the best instant tents, you can see this long list of great models in various sizes. About dark rest tents, you see more in this text, and about screened tents you can see more here.
So all these models are presented here. You will see that some of the tents include several of these features. For example, you can have an instant cabin tent with 2 rooms, which therefore includes the three of the features mentioned above. Or you can have an extended dome tent with 2 rooms, so again three features in one tent.
There is an incredible diversity here also regarding the prices. It sounds incredible but the most expensive tent in the list is around 27 times more expensive than the most affordable tent.
The list below includes the tents ordered by the inner floor area, from the largest to the smallest.
My list of best 6 person tents for camping

But you also have a huge sitting room, completely floored, and the mentioned porch and vestibule in front of the tent.

I have included it also in my text about dark rest tents because of its unique inner room, which is also soundproof. This tent offers full protection in all seasons, and it works equally well in a cold environment and for summer camping.
- Total protected area: 300 ft² (28 m²).
- Enormous size and comfort.

2. Coleman Air Valdes 6XL Tent
Here you have an enormous structure with no less than 230 ft² (21.44 m²) of the inner floor area, plus the porch with 113.7 ft² (10.56 m²). As the name suggests, this is a tent with inflatable beams, though you also have 2 classic poles on the porch as you see from the picture.
The tent has 4 rooms and three of them are sleeping rooms with blackout design so 99% of the daylight is blocked. Such a design allows for a climate control and the tent is cooler during the day.
You have an impressive waterproof rating here of 4500 mm, so the tent is suitable for any weather conditions in a 3-season use. There are 4 PVC windows and they are also equipped with shutters from inside. There are 3 doors, and one of them is the hinged door. Please read more in my detailed review.
3. Vango Avington 600XL 6 Man Family Tent
This tent offers 18.2 m² (196 ft²) of the inner floor and this would be a reason enough to have it here in the list. But this huge area is not all, you still have a large porch extra. The tent is also dark rest type, which means that the inner area is from a dark material to reduce the daylight.
The tent is a 3-room type and this includes a large living room with 4 PVC windows and 2 entry doors, plus a sleeping area divided into two sleeping rooms. You have an impressive waterproof rating of 4000 mm, so the tent will keep you dry in any weather conditions. Please read more in my full review.
4. Vango Capri 600XL Tent – Air Beam Tent
The Vango Capri 600XL is a tunnel-type tent with air beams instead of the classic poles. Only the front porch pole is the metal pole. You have a pump included in the package and you will set it up in a couple of minutes.
This is a very comfortable option for family camping in a cooler environment. So you have 3 rooms in total, and those include 2 small sleeping rooms plus a huge sitting area. As you see from the picture, you also have a huge porch for sitting and for cooking.
The inner sitting area of this tent is so huge that it can easily accommodate 12 people, although its declared capacity is 6 people. The sleeping area of this tent is with an extra inner layer, so it acts as a cocoon and it makes the interior darker than the normal tent. This is the reason for including it in my list of dark rest tents.
Note that this tent comes with an impressive waterproof rating, so this is a very reliable option for wet areas with lots of rain. No surprise, this tent is manufactured by a brand from Scotland.
- Inner area: 194 ft² (18 m²).
- Porch area: 41 ft² (3.8 m²).
- Air Beam technology.
- This is also a dark rest tent.

5. Eurohike Buckingham 6 Man Tent

The inner area is organized in 4 different units. You have a central living area with two entry doors, and on the two sides you have 3 sleeping rooms, each designed for two people. So this is a tent for families with up to 4 kids, or for 3 couples, and for groups of course.
The sleeping units are tents within the tent and they are all removable. When you remove one of them, you get an extra door on one of the two narrow sides, and here you can create a large awning. Note that both side doors also allow for awning configurations, and one of them is shown in the picture. So this is a very versatile and functional tent. Please see more in my detailed review.
6. Eurohike Hampton 6 Tent
This tent is with the inner area of 192 ft² (17.8 m²), and you also have the porch with another 41 ft² (3.8 m²). So here you have a luxurious option for family camping. The tent is organized in 3 separate rooms, a large living area plus two sleeping units with the dark rest design.
The waterproof rating of 3000 mm is such that you have full protection in a 3-season use. The tent is with 2 external doors both with mesh and panel, and with 2 inner doors. All 5 windows are solid PVC material plus blinds for privacy.
It allows for the awning configuration which you see in the picture, there are two steel poles in the package for this purpose only. Please read more in my full review.
7. Crua Core Dome 6 Person Tent
This is a unique tent in the group. This is an air beam tent dome-shaped and this is one of its unique features. It offers 192 ft² (17.8 m²) of the inner floor area, but this is not all. You also have a porch which adds 67 ft² (6.25 m²) of the protected space. This is also the tallest tent here with 7.5 ft (229 cm) peak height.
The Core 6 can be used in a combination which they call the Crua Clan that includes also the Cocoon Insulated tents and the Duo tents.

8. Vango Odyssey Air 600 Tent

This is a structure with two separate parts, a huge sitting area, and a sleeping area. The latter is a tent within the tent, and it is with a divider, so effectively you have a 3-room camping tent here. The waterproof rating of the tent is impressive and this is a very reliable 3-season camping tool.
- No metal poles – all air beams.
- Easy setup.
- Very reliable and great weather protection.
- “Lights out” design.
- Weight: 38.6 lb (17.5 kg).
- Dimensions (L x W): 183.07 x 149.61 in (465 x 380 cm).
- Floor area: 190 ft² (17.67 m²).
9. Eurohike Buckingham Elite 6 Tent
This tent comes with several great features and with a huge floor area of 181 ft² (16.8 m²). You have 3 separate rooms; the inner area is organized into a large central living room plus two side rooms which have the place for 3 people each. So the official capacity is 6 people but it offers far more space than you need.
Note also that the sleeping zones are tents within the tent, and they are built from a darker material to reduce glare, so the tent belongs to the group of dark rest tents.
There are two entry doors and they are with mesh and with flaps, and on one of them you can create an awning. The poles for this are included.
The windows are PVC material and they are also with blinds for privacy and to reduce glare. The 3000 mm waterproof rating should be good enough for any weather conditions in a 3-season use. Please see my full review.
10. Eurohike Rydal 600 Family Tent
The Rydal 600 is a nicely designed and budget-friendly tent with no less than 3 rooms. You have a large living room plus two sleeping rooms separated by a divider, and this sleeping area is a tent within the external shell tent.
You have 181 ft² (16.8 m²) of the area here, so you realize how luxurious this is for 6 people. But the tent has much more. This is also the dark rest design, and the glare in the sleeping zone is reduced. The tent is with two gigantic doors and it has two PVC windows which are equipped with shutters to reduce glare.
There are many small details that make this tent very livable. You have around 18 pockets for storage of your stuff, there is an electric cable port, lantern hanging points are in every room, and much more. Please read more in my detailed review.
11. Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent
So why is this tent in the list? As the name suggests, this is a screened tent, and this is the only tent of this type here. At the same time, this great tent offers far more covered space than any other tent presented here. So you have in total 9.2 + 6.7 m² in the main room and in the screened room.
This is also the only tent in the list with a hinged door. The tent is basically the cabin type, with very steep and high walls, the peak height is 80 in inches (203 cm). The poles are very strong 19 mm thick steel. All in all, this is an incredibly livable summertime family camping tent.

12. Arctic Oven Tent
The Arctic Oven tent may look ordinary from outside, but there is nothing ordinary in this tent. I would start with its price which is around $2700. So if you feel shocked, you should check my link below and read more about this tent.
Here I would point out that this is a tent designed to work with a wood stove, so you have a pipe jack on the roof. The tent is built from a special Vapex material which is breathable.
The tent is a cabin-style, designed obviously for all seasons, and most suitable for very cold environments. The materials are durable and heavy, and you have a full-coverage rain fly which will protect you regardless of what Mother Nature has prepared for you.

This is one of the tents with air beam technology. So there are no metal poles here, you have a pump included and the tent can be inflated and raised from the ground in 7 minutes by one person only.
This is a 3-room structure, so you have two sleeping rooms on the two sides and a central sitting room in the middle. Obviously, the tent is tunnel-type and without mesh, the windows are solid PVC translucent panels. This makes the tent more suitable for a cooler environment.
- Floor area: 150 ft² (13.8 m²).
- Area per person: 25 ft² (2.3 m²) – plenty of space for 6 people.
- Air beams instead of classic poles.
- Very easy setup.
- 3-room tent.
14. ALPS Mountaineering Camp Creek Two-Room Tent
The Camp Creek Two Room tent is the larger 2-room version from the Camp Creek series which also includes a single room 6-person tent. So here you have more space and the tent is organized in two rooms each with its own entry door. This is a pleasant and very tall structure with the peak height of 84 inches (213 cm) and with many windows on all sides.
The floor area is 120 ft² (11.16 m²). The tent is with a decent waterproof rating of 1500 mm, and all materials are durable. The structure is cabin type as you realize from the picture so the tent is best used for summer camping.
15. Coleman 6 Person Sundome Tent
This is the most affordable of all tents in the list and this is the main reason for having it here. As of the moment of writing this text, its price is from $63 and up, so follow the link below to see more. This tent is with a partial-coverage fly which protects mainly the ceiling. So you do not have vestibules, but you still have a lot of the inner space.
This tent is for very mild summer weather conditions and I would not use it if you expect a lot of rain; see the models above if this is the case. The setup is very easy, typical for the dome-style tent, so you have only two main poles here, plus a short ridge pole which creates small awnings on the front and on the back.
Note that the tent has windows, and due to the awnings, they can be kept open all the time. So you will not have condensation issues with this tent.
- Total protected space 9.3 m².
- Incredibly affordable.
- Very lightweight.
- Very easy setup.
- Floor ventilation opening.
- Great packed size.
- 2 windows.
- Zippered port for an electric cable.

This is the first of the instant tents here, and it is also the cabin type. So you have an incredibly easy setup under one minute. If you are on a cross-country tour or any other tour where you change the place frequently and need an easy setup tent, this is the one to consider.
The tent is very pleasant and livable, with huge windows and the huge door. But note that you do not have a vestibule here for the storage of the gear. Though the inner space is really good, and if you use the car to keep some gear there, you will be doing great with this tent.
- Total protected space 9.2 m².
- Instant setup.
- Incredible price.
- Pleasant and livable tent.
- Lantern hook.
- Gear loft included.
- Huge wall organizer included.
- Electricity port.
17. Slumberjack Trail Tent 6
This is a very typical dome style tent with a full coverage fly. The inner area is only 99 ft² (9.2 m²), but you also have two vestibules and when you add them to the numbers you get the total protected area of 154 ft² (14.4 m²), and per person this gives 25.7 ft² (2.4 m²).
The tent is the freestanding type and its waterproof rating is 1200 mm. With such a full fly, it provides a full protection in a 3-season use. The poles are not its best features, they use fiberglass, but all other materials are durable and this is a reliable tent in general. It has been on the market fotr many years already, so you can rely on it and on the brand behind the tent.
18. Marmot Halo 6 Person Tent
This tent has been on the market at least 7 – 8 years already, always very popular and highly appreciated. But they have modified it recently and further improved, so what you see here is its latest 2018 version.
As you realize, this is a full fly tent and I have included it in my list of full-coverage tents. The tent is also dome-style but it has an extra pole on the front which adds lost of space on the front of one of the doors. There are two doors here and two vestibules, and you have 96.7 + 64 ft² (9 + 6 m²) of the protected area.
The tent packs nicely to only 25 x 14 in (64 x 36 cm) so you can transport it even on a motorbike, but it is quite heavy. The waterproof rating is quite good, so you have 1800 mm in the fly and 3000 mm in the floor. With this and the full fly, you will be protected in any weather conditions. Please see more in my detailed review.
19. NEMO Wagontop 6 Person Tent
This is a very tall and livable, 2-room family camping tent, and the word `wagontop’ describes its unusual shape which looks like old wagons. The tent offers 9 square meters of the area in the inner zone plus 2.5 square meters in a very functional vestibule.
This is a cabin-type tent with vertical walls, so here you can use bunk beds and save the space even more. You have 2 doors, one on each side.
Ventilation windows are above both doors, equipped with storm flaps, but you can also keep them open all the time, they are protected by the vestibules. So you will not have issues with condensation.
- Total protected space 11.5 m².

- Great space per person.
- Easy setup based on the hubbed pole structure.
- 2-rooms design.

20. Eureka Copper Canyon 6 Family Tent
Eureka Copper Canyon 6 Family Tent is a cabin type freestanding family camping tent. Its design is such that you should use it in moderate summer conditions, and the main reasons for including it to the list are its livability and great design.
This is a tent for mild summer conditions without too much rain. But in the case of rain, all these huge windows and the door are with the waterproof panels, so you will just zip them up.
The tent is without the vestibule, so all the protected space is inside, and because of this, you might downgrade it to 4 – 5 people only.
The tent is very tall and its steep walls are such that you can put any bunk cots here. In such a case you can easily have the prescribed number of people in this tent.
- Total protected space 9 m².
- This is a freestanding tent.
- Very tall tent.
- Typical cabin type tent.
- Huge windows.
- Very small packed size.
- Electricity port available.
21. Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6
There are many reasons for having this tent on the list. This is the new version of the iconic tent which has been on the market for many years. You might say that this is an extended cabin type tent. So you have the main dome plus an extended section, and the tent comes with a divider so this is a 2-room tent.
The tent offers 8.5 square meters in the main two rooms + 3 square meters in the 2 vestibules, so this is all protected space here.
It is declared as a 3-season plus tent so you can use it in conditions close to winter type. There is no tent on the list which would match its storage features which include 16 huge storage pockets plus two vestibules.
- Total protected space 11.5 m².
- Quite unique design.
- A most reliable tent which offers a full protection from elements.
- Several different configurations with the fly and with the front vestibule.

22. Alprang Camping Tent 6
The Alprang 6 is a very simple and easy to use dome style tent with a very good waterproof rating for its partial coverage fly, so you have 3000 mm here. The tent offers 90 ft² (8.4 m²) of the area and its declared capacity is 6 people. This is not so much and it is best to downgrade this number of users by half.
The tent is fully freestanding even when you put the fly on, so you can pitch it anywhere. As you see from the picture, you have one door and two windows, the ventilation is good and you have a floor vent on the back. The tent is best suited for a warmer climate because of its mesh on the ceiling. The price tag is such that it is hard to find a match. Please follow the link to read more, it is described in detail in my separate review.
23. Big Agnes Tensleep Station 6 Tent
What you see in the picture is the 2018 version of the great tent from Big Agnes. So as you realize, this is a full coverage fly tent which will protect you from elements in any weather situations in a 3-season use.
The tent is dome style, but it has an extra pole which creates an exceptionally large front vestibule which allows for multiple awning configurations. One of them is shown in the picture.
The tents inner area is 90 ft² (8.4 m²), and the declared capacity is 6 people. But note that you have 2 vestibules which create extra 38.5 ft² + 10 ft² (3.6 + 0.9 m²) of the protected space. So the tent provides a lot of storage area for equipment and this increases its livability in spite of a relatively small inner area.
The packed size is 27 x 15 x 5 inches (68 x 38 x 12 cm), small enough to be transported even on a motorbike.
24. Mountainsmith Cottonwood 6P Tent
This is a 6 person tent so let’s see what it offers. The inner area is 90 ft² (8.4 m²) and you also have a porch or vestibule area which is 29.5 ft² (2.7 m²). The tent is with a full coverage fly and it so lightweight that I have included it in my list of best 6-person backpacking tents, note that it weighs only 13 lb 5 oz (6.04 kg).
You have a great waterproof rating here, 2000 mm for the fly and 5000 mm for the floor. There are 3 poles and they are all aluminum. The structure is a simple dome plus a pole that supports the porch. There are also some unique features; the tent is with windows on the fly. Note also that this is a very affordable tent, only $160 as of the moment of writing this text.
25. Ozark Trail 6-Person Dark Rest Instant Cabin Tent
This is the most typical dark rest tent here in the list and this is the main reason for adding it here. So it is built of dark materials and the ceiling is a 3-layer design which includes the fly, the mesh ceiling, and dark panels with zippers. With such panels, you can regulate the amount of the sunlight in the tent. Note that you also have vinyl windows on the fly, which is a distinctive feature of the tent.
Many of the features of this tent are already in its name. So as you realize this is an instant tent and cabin-type as well, so you can set it up in 60 seconds. This makes it a great choice for people who change their camping place frequently. But its main feature is its darkroom design of course, and I would add the price as well; with its $111 price tag, this is one of the most affordable tents here.
- Floor area: 90 ft² (8.36 m²).
- Dark-room design.
- Floor vent available.
- 3 windows.
- Gear loft included.
- Electrical cord access.
- Vinyl windows on the fly.
- Incredibly affordable tent.

Here you have a tent that incorporates several extraordinary features:
- The dark test technology.
- The fast-pitch design.
- The screen room.
You have the total area of 40 ft² (13 m²), though the screen room is not fully protected, so the truly protected zone is the inner room with the dimensions 10 x 9 ft (3.05 x 2.74 m) which means 8.36 square meters. This can accommodate 6 sleeping pads on the ground.
The tent is a dome-style so a bit low, with the peak height of 68 in (173 cm). The packed size is great 26 x 11 x 11 inches (66 x 28 x 28 cm), and the same holds for the price. Please see more in my detailed review.
27. Coleman 6 Person Instant Tent
There are several good reasons why this tent is on the list. This is an enormously popular tent which has been on the market for a number of years already. The tent includes several features mentioned in the introduction above, so it is instant, and it is cabin type tent. In addition to this, this is a tent with an integrated fly, similar to the tent number 9 above. So this is a single-layer type with a waterproof roof, but if you want extra protection they sell a fly separately.
Obviously, the tent is very livable with such great windows, but it is without vestibule, so the space is what you have inside.
The windows and the door are with waterproof panels which you will use when it is raining, otherwise, you keep it open with the mesh on, so you have a full protection from insects.
- Total inner space 8.1 m².
- Incredibly fast setup.
- Very affordable tent and great price.
- Built-in rain fly.
- Single layer design.

28. Lightspeed Outdoors Mammoth 6-Person Instant Set-Up Tent
This is an instant tent, but of a particular type, and it is specific also due to the following reason – this is a single-layer type without an extra fly. This is also one of the most affordable tents presented here, only around $110 at the moment of writing this text.
The tent is with a relatively small floor area, you have 8.1 square meters, so if you are a group of people, and you sleep on the floor, you can manage with 6, you still have 1.35 square meters per person. In the case of families, downgrade it to parents with maximum 2 small kids.
The tent has an integrated fly and vestibule, but they do not provide details about the vestibule area. So you definitely have some extra covered space and this tent should be ranked higher in this list.
- Total space 8.1 m² inside + the vestibule.
- Instant set-up and take-down.
- No extra layers.
- Heavy-duty 2000 mm PU coated built-in rainfly.
- Quite tall for this type, 189 cm (6.2 ft).
29. The North Face Wawona 6 Tent
You have only 86.11 ft² (8 m²) of the inner floor area here but there is a vestibule and a huge porch and they together give 21 ft² (2 m²) + 44.7 ft² (4.2 m²), respectively. So the total protected space is 151.8 ft² (14.2 m²), and per person this gives 25.3 ft² (2.4 m²). As you realize, this is lots of space for a family camping.
The tent is a single-layer type and an extended dome. They do not provide the number for the waterproof rating but they claim it is with double-sided coating and fully waterproof. You have top quality materials here and the tent is built to last. It will protect you in any weather conditions in a three-season use. Please read more in my full review.
30. Kelty Sequoia 6 Person Tent
This is a new tent on the market which Kelty launched in February 2018. The height is impressive for a full fly tent, so indeed you have 82 in (208 cm) inner peak height. The tent is freestanding and with very strong steel poles. The inner area is relatively small, only 8 square meters, but you have extra 3.9 square meters under the front vestibule. This together with the mentioned height make it a very livable structure.
- Total protected area: 11.9 m².
- Very tall tent.
- Very large vestibule.
- Full-cover fly.
- Great packed size.
31. Marmot Limestone 6
This great tent is built with a high-level workmanship, meticulously and with attention to details. This is one of the most reliable tents in the group, designed to last for years. This is a double-layer dome style freestanding tent type at its best, an improved version of the tent that has been on the market for many years already.
The tent’s inner area is relatively small, but you have two asymmetric vestibules which add 3.6 square meters of fully protected area for gear. All materials are superior quality, and the design is such that it looks almost like a cabin tent, so it provides lots of volume.
- Total protected space 7.75 + 2.5 + 1.1 m² = 11.35 m².

- Stargazing fly design.
- Very good price.
- Two doors.
- Two vestibules for gear storage.

33. Eureka Boondocker Hotel 6 Tent
If you judge only by the inner area, you might get a very wrong impression about this tent. It is low on the list because of its small inner floor area which is only 82 ft² (7.6 m²). But you have a huge garage and a vestibule, so the space they add is 36 + 22 ft² (3.34 + 2 m²). With this included, you have the total area per person of 23 ft² (2.16 m²).
What you have here is a very functional and pleasant structure, with two doors and with a window on the back. The full coverage fly and its 1800 mm waterproof rating is good enough for any weather conditions in a 3-season use. Note that the floor is with 3000 mm rating. This is a very reliable and nicely built tent, please read more in my full review.
34. EXIO 6-Person Compact Backcountry Tent
This EXIO 6-Person Compact Backcountry Tent is ‘compact’ only by the name and by its inner area. So indeed, this is why it is in this position here in the list. But this ‘compact’ tent includes also a gigantic vestibule (which is more a porch than a vestibule) and this provides additional 6.5 square meters of the completely protected area.
But the true reasons for having this tent here are the following. Regarding the quality, this tent is completely in the rank of the Big Agnes Flying Diamond tent and the Marmot Limestone tent. Yet it is roughly half of the price of the other two tents. This is a new model on the market and the brand is less known and this is the reason for its price, but this is indeed a quality tent.
In spite of its position in the list, you will notice that it offers more covered space than the other two tents. And yes, the tent comes with a footprint included and the full-coverage fly, see the picture above.
- Floor area: 80 ft² (7.4 m²).
- Peak height: 78 in (198 cm).
- Vestibule area: 70 ft² (6.5 m²).
- Very lightweight.
- Great packed size.
- Easy setup.
- 3 doors.
- Footprint included.
- Great value for the money.
So this was my list of the best 6 person tents for camping that are on the market now. As you realize, there are many different groups here, so how to choose?
- If this is about money, then the Coleman Sundome and the Ozark Trail Dark Rest tents are without a match.
- If you want the best of the best regarding the weather protection, then consider the Crua Loj 6 tent, Big Agnes, Nemo tent, and Marmot Limestone tent. Those are the tents that will keep you dry in any weather circumstances, but there are more reliable tools as you have seen above.
- If you will be moving a lot from place to place, after some time setting up the tent can become annoying. If so, then consider the instant tents shown above.
- If you want a luxurious option for quiet summer camping in mild conditions, check the Coleman WeatherMaster tent.
- Do not forget the Crua Loj 6 tent if you need an insulated option for winter use. But the Arctic Oven is an equally attractive option for such a use, if you can afford it.
- Want something truly modern and advanced? Then check the Vango Capro tent with its air beam technology, the same is with its cousin the Vango Odyssey 600.
Those are some hints, and you have plenty of great options. You might want to check also my list with the best 5 person camping tents. Thank you for reading and please use the comment box below if you have any comment or question.
