Slumberjack Adult Daybreak Tent 6 Person is a freestanding dome-style 3-season tent with a full fly, a great awning configuration, and a very affordable price.
Key features
- Dome tent.
- Freestanding.
- Full coverage fly.
- Awning configuration.
- Great price.
What type of tent is this
The Daybreak 6 tent is a part of the series that includes tents for 2, 3, 4, and 6 people. This is a freestanding dome style tent with a full-coverage fly for a full protection against elements. So I have included it in my list of full fly tents.
The tent becomes freestanding and self-supporting as soon as you put the ends of the poles into the corner grommets. But as usual, the large vestibule must be staked down properly to be useful and functional.
This is a tall tent with a peak height of 71 inches (180 cm). You have a nice carry bag included, see it in the picture:
Who is it for
Space-wise, the declared capacity is 6 people, but the inner area is 91.1 ft² (8.5 m²) and this means 15.2 ft² (1.4 m²) per person. There is a large vestibule that offers 27.7 ft² (2.6 m²) of the protected area for the gear. So the total area per person is 19.8 ft² (1.85 m²). Now, this is not so bad and it can indeed accommodate such a number of people. But realistically this tent is best if used up to 3-4 people. See the floor area and what they suggest as a way of using it:
When you see the dimensions you realize it is impossible to have 2 people on the length of the tent. So the floor is better used if the occupants sleep oriented along the shorter size. This allows also for easier access to the door for every person. The picture which they provide simply makes no sense.
Weight-wise, with 16.6 lb (7.54 kg) this tent is moderately heavy. This is not something you would carry on the trail. If you need such a tent for 6 people, better check my list with 6-person backpacking tents. So this is a tent for places with a motorized access.
Climate-wise and seasons-wise, being a tent with a full fly, you will surely be completely protected in this tent. The waterproof rating is 1200 mm for the fly and for the floor. This may not look too much (in particular for the floor) but you do not need more if all the seams are watertight.
You have seen the picture above showing that the inner tent is all mesh, so this is a tent for a warm climate. They describe it as a 3-season tent but I would not use it in a cold environment.
Price-wise, this is a very affordable tent, see the links below.
Materials & construction
The poles
This is a dome structure with two main fiberglass poles plus two brow poles that cross them and pull the side walls up. This gives more elbow space in the tent. The ends of the poles fit in the corner grommets and this is what makes the tent self-supporting.
Fiberglass is not the most durable option, see more about poles material in my separate text about tent poles, but you would not expect anything else in such a budget tent.
The fabric
The inner tent is all 40D polyester No-See-Um mesh, the floor is a reasonably durable 66D polyester with 1200 mm coating, and the fly is also 66D polyester with the same coating. You have buckles in the corner sections of the fly to attach it easily to the tent’s frame. Note that there are no vents on the fly.
The front vestibule is with two parallel zippers so you can roll it up and fix above the only door, or you can create a pleasant awning by using your trekking poles upside down. You have loops on the vestibule for this purpose to attach it to the tips of the poles.
Other features
- There are mesh pockets in every corner to store small items.
- Steel stakes are in the package.
- You also have reflective guylines.
