Overview
This Naturehike KOTA 6 Person Camping Tent is an extended dome type tent. It includes a dome type inner tent supported with its three poles and completely freestanding. The picture below shows the inner tent alone.
The third pole is added to make the inner door completely vertical as you realize from the picture above. Notice that the fabric is mainly mesh.
But it has a full coverage fly that protects the inner tent and creates a huge porch supported with an added loop pole. The picture below shows the fly alone, so you realize you can use it as it is, without the inner tent.
This is possible because of the yellow webbing straps that are on the ground and they keep the structure together. But the part on the right in the picture must be staked to be functional.
This configuration is typically called fast-fly variant. It allows you to use it as a canopy on the beach, or for family events in the garden. The picture below shows the canopy from inside, without the inner tent.
The overall shape of this tent is similar to the North Face Wawona and Kaiju tents, and Slumberjack Spruce Creek 6 Person Dome Tent. But all these tents are far inferior to this Naturehike tent which I have included in my list of tents with a full fly.
The floor plan below reveals a bit more about the structure, on the right you have the floored inner tent, and the floorless porch is on the left. Note that the tent is very tall, so you have a stand-up height in the middle.
The porch, or you can call it a vestibule as well, is like a floorless room. Here you have full protection from the rain, and it is large enough to keep all your camping furniture in it, and to use it for cooking and for sitting.
Below you can see a bit more of the porch area, the inner tent is on the left side:
The inner tent is a back room for sleeping, with a fully sewn-in floor, and with complete protection from insects, see the view from inside of it in the direction of the porch:
The doors and windows
From the pictures you have already seen that there are two identical doors on the porch. On the upper part of the doors they have added a zippered panel and mesh, so here you have two effective windows which you can use as it suits you.
But they have added two zippered flaps on the canopy. You can roll them up and have views around as shown in the picture:
These shell openings/windows match the inner windows on the inner tent. You can see them below, they are with mesh and with panels to regulate privacy and air drafts as it suits you.
So although the tent is with a full coverage fly, you still have an option to use windows when the sky is clear. This is a luxurious detail and it adds to versatility of the tent.
Hot tent functionality
The Naturehike KOTA tent comes ready for a wood burning tent stove. For this you have a stove jack on the roof in the porch area:
Obviously, when not in use, you can keep it closed, a flap is in place. But with this option you will stay warm and cook indoors during your cold weather camping trips. I have included it in my list of tents with a stove jack.
Materials
They use very good materials here. All the elements in the package are shown in the picture:
The poles & stakes: You have them four and this is a 7001 series aluminum alloy, shock corded and color coded. The meaning is that it is composed of 87% aluminum, 2.1% copper, 0.25% chrome, 7.3% zinc, and 3% magnesium.
A full set of stakes is also included.
The fabric: The shell material is a 75D 210T polyester with a waterproof PU coating rated at 3000 mm minimum. You will never need more.
The floor is a thicker 150D poly Oxford, and all mesh parts are a B3 net.
Other details: There are several different types of wall pouches to keep your stuff off ground and to stay organized:
A lantern hook is available, and zippers are smooth:
Ventilation
In this tent ventilation system is almost optimal. The inner tent is mainly mesh so vapor can escape easily, and the mentioned side windows plus the windows on the external doors will allow for air cross-flow. These details are visible in the picture:
Even if you have to close fly windows, you have the inner door which is fully protected and with mesh, and you can get air from the porch area and underneath the shell.
The two fly vents are a bit small and perhaps too low, but this will still allow vapor to exit and to reduce condensation. Below you can see some details of the ventilation set.
Who is the Naturehike KOTA 6 Person Camping Tent for
Regarding the area, you have 81 ft² (7.5 m²) of the floored space plus 55 ft² (5.1 m²) in the porch. In total this is 136 ft² (12.6 m²) of covered area.
The dimensions are such that you can put 6 pads on the floor as you realize from the picture below where the numbers are now in centimeters. But it is best to think about 4 users maximum.
Regarding seasons & climate, they describe it as a 4-season versatile shelter and they are right about it. In warm months you have plenty of options for ventilation, and in a cold environment you can heat the tent.
The inner tent is mainly mesh but with the full fly that goes all the way to the ground, with a stove inside you will be warm.
On the other hand, the tent is fully closable and with a smooth profile, so although it is tall, it will perform well even in windy places.
Waterproof rating is impressive and there is no doubt you will be dry no matter where you use it.
If you use it in a dry environment, a group of people can even carry the inner tent in backpacks and enjoy stargazing in summer nights. It is freestanding and you can use it anywhere, and under any large tarp.
You have already seen that the shell can be used separately as a large canopy, providing sun and rain protection. All in all, this tent is a very versatile camping option.
Regarding the weight, the tent is moderately heavy, you will see the numbers below. But this is a car camping tent so the weight is not so important.
The packed size is a bit more important, and the tent can be described as bulky. The carry bag and its dimensions are given here:
Regarding the price, I would say it is fair for such a great tent. The link below will allow you to check for updates.
