Ferrino Proxes 5 Advanced Family Tent is a very large 3-room structure with 3 doors and fiberglass poles, suitable for 3-season family camping. So keep reading.
Key features
- 3 Rooms.
- 3 Doors.
- Fiberglass poles.
- Tunnel style tent.
What this is about
So here you have a tunnel-shaped tent with a shell tent and an inner tent with removable divider. The structure is with a maximum of 3 rooms, but you can remove the divider and use it as a 2-room tent. You can remove the inner tent completely and have the shell tent only. I have included it in my list with best 3-room tents. The picture below shows how it looks, this is the view inside from the main front door:
As you see from the picture above, there is a D-shaped rear door, plus one D-shaped side door. The main front door is with a dual zipper and you can roll it up as the top picture shows. Note that only the side door is a double layer structure with mesh and panel.
The picture above shows how detached the inner tent is from the shell. This is good to fight condensation, there is enough space for airflow between the front and rear vents.
The tent’s structure is best seen from this floor plan below, so you can have a complete structure in front of view. So the sleeping area is a double-layer part while the living room is a single layer zone this is so in many tunnel tents with inner tents.
This tent is not freestanding, this is typical for tunnel tents, but you might want to know that there are some nice exceptions here in the site, see for example this MSR H.U.B. 8 Tent.
Who is it for
Space-wise, the declared capacity is 5 people, but see the area which is 162 ft² (15 m²). This gives 32.4 ft² (3 m²) per person and this is a really generous space for family camping. The area is exactly the same as in their another Ferrino Chanty 5 Deluxe tent.
Note that the front living room is large, so if necessary here you can place several sleeping pads on the ground. So the tent can accommodate more people than what its declared capacity tells you. So I have included this tent in my list of best 5-person camping tents.
Seasons-wise & climate-wise, this is a rather enclosed tent so it is good for a cooler climate. In the case of warm weather camping you will have to rely on vents if it is raining, but you have them enough on the front and on the back. Though I miss floor vents, they are necessary if you have to keep all the openings closed due to rain.
The waterproof rating is very good so this tent will protect you in any weather conditions in a 3-season use.
Weight-wise, with 29.1 lb (13.2 kg) it may look heavy but see its 15 square meters of the floor area. You will see below how this compares with some of its competitors.
The packed size is also very good for such a large structure, it reduces to 25.2 x 11 x 11 inches (64 x 28 x 28 cm). So you can transport this tent even on a motorbike.
Materials
The poles & stakes
There are 3 main shock-corded poles that create the loops, plus one brow pole on the front. This is all fiberglass, not particularly durable material, but it is quite common. As you see, you can find it even in these expensive tents. There should be at least 13 steel stakes in the package.
The fabric
The shell is a 70D polyester diamond, 75 g/m². It is coated with a thermal-insulated aluminized polyurethane with a 2000 mm waterproof rating. The material is water repellent. All seams are taped. The flysheet floor is waterproof and fully welded polyethylene with a waterproof rating of more than 10000 mm.
The inner tent’s body is a water-repellent yet breathable polyester. Its floor is 70D polyester, 80 g/m², and its waterproof rating is 2500 mm.
Other features
- Sleeping area doors with exterior mosquito net.
- Side door in the flysheet with inner mosquito net.
- Multi-point guy-line system to secure the tent.
- Adjustable fly sheet distance from the base for excellent tensioning.
- Internal storage pockets.
- Internal lamp hook.
- Large Supertex stuff sack.
- Repair kit included.

Summary, rating, pros & cons
In the summary of this Ferrino Proxes 5 Advanced Family Tent review, I would stress that this tent indeed looks like an advanced structure. Its organization and area are great, its packs small, the protection which it offers is excellent, but this comes at a price. The comparison table offers some alternatives if you cannot afford this tent. In any case, I have included it in my list with best tunnel type tents.
Note that Ferrino is a well-known and respected European tent manufacturer. They started the business in 1870 in Turin, Italy. My understanding is that currently it is less known on the US market but their tents are becoming more and more popular.
Please see how I rate it against my standard set of criteria:
You might want to check also their Ferrino Proxes 5 Family Tent with the same waterproof rating but a bit different design. Check yet another great tent from this brand, the Ferrino Meteora 5 Tent. Otherwise, check under the category Tunnel Tents if this is the type you want.
Note that this is not a sponsored text and I have no business relationship with this brand. What do you think about this tent? Please share your thoughts, there is a comment box below.

I am looking for a good waterproof 12 person tent, also good in windy situations. Any recommendations This is for a family of 5

Hi Martha, I guess you assume that the tents are always too small by the declared capacity and this is why you want a 12-person tent. But there are many 5-person tents with multiple rooms that have more than enough space. This Ferrino Proxes 5 Advanced is one of them.
But if you want a 12-person tent, please check my list with such tents. From this group I would suggest this NTK Super Arizona GT Tent.
Now back to 5-person tents. Please check this list with best 5-person tents. Here you have many highly waterproof tents that are stable in windy situations. It depends on how much you are willing to invest, there are some top-notch tents here in the list, the best of the best. See for example this Jack Wolfskin Travel Lodge FR tent, but there are many more.
Let me know if I can offer more help.
