Ozark Trail 11 Person 3 Room Instant Cabin Tent – With Private Room

Last Modified: 11/27/2023

The Ozark Trail 11 Person 3 Room Instant Cabin Tent is an interesting structure with an additional private room added to the rear of the tent. You also have a very useful awning above the dual entrance doors.

Key benefits & features

  • Instant setup. Well, almost instant.
  • 3 rooms.
  • Awning available.
  • Electric port.

What is in the name

So you have a lot already in the title. This is an instant tent with telescopic poles and the setup typical for such a tent, but there is a bit more to that because of the third room, more below. The walls are very tall and straightened as you would expect from a cabin-style tent.

The tent includes 3 rooms, so you have the main cabin with a removable divider, plus an unusual addition attached to the rear side of the main cabin body. As for the 11-person capacity, I shall say a bit more below.

Who is it for

This is a summer camping tent for families and groups. The fact that it has a divider in the main cabin part, plus an attached room on the rear side, tell you that you can have some privacy in such a space. But this only assuming that you ignore the declared capacity of 11 people.

Dimensions & capacity & best use

You will see in the specifications the size 14 x 14, indicating feet of course. But this is totally misleading. These numbers only describe the ground needed to set up this tent. This because its floor area is T shaped, with two separate units:

  • The main cabin part is 14 x 8 ft (4.27 x 2.44 m).
  • The private room extension is 8 x 6 ft (2.44 x 1.83 m).

But the tent is with an awning, which needs another 8 x 6 ft in front of the entrance doors. This would mean that the ground area is of the shape + or a cross, and the two lengths are 14 and 20 ft. Though you do not need to use the awning if you don’t have enough ground.

Back, to the inner area; this gives 112 + 48 ft²= 160 ft² (14.9 m²). So if you would use it for 11 people, you would have 14.5 ft² (1.35 m²) per person. This could work if you apply the backpacking capacity principle, but for a real camping this makes no much sense. As I suggested in my text about tent capacity, simply divide this number of people by 2. So this is a tent for 5 or a maximum of 6 people.

You can organize the space as you wish. You can put 2 queen size mattresses on the ends, allowing plenty of room in between for the passage to the back room. The back room alone has enough space for a queen size mattress. See how they think you could squeeze 11 people inside:

This is how they suggest using the tent for 11 people sleeping on the floor.
This is how they suggest using the tent for 11 people sleeping on the floor.

Seasons-wise, as I already pointed above, this is a tent for a relatively warmer climate, for summer camping and without much rain. This is because of i) lots of mesh on the ceiling, which is not the best choice in a cool climate, and, ii) because of the minimal fly which covers only the ceiling, so such a design is not the best in the case of lots of rain.

The packed size is typical for the instant tents, and one dimension is relatively long, 48 x 10 x 10 in (122 x 25 x 25 cm). So you will use this tent at places with a car access.

Construction & materials

From the text above you already have the idea about the inner area, so you have two rooms in the main cabin separated by the removable divider, and a private room as an extension. There are two entry doors, so the divider attaches in the middle between them, and in such a case, every room in the cabin part has its own door.

In such a configuration with the divider, you can enter the back private room from any of the front rooms. There is a large double size door with 2 zippers so you can open it from any of the two front rooms. The back room is without its own external door, but there is a window on the back, see the picture. This is why I have added this tent to my list of camping tents with closets.

Front awning

You have the awning available, and it creates a great sitting area in front of the main entry doors, and its size is roughly 8 x 6 ft (2.44 x 1.83 m).

The tent is equipped with two poles for the awning which is with grommets, so you can fix the awning and the poles with guylines and stakes. If the awning is not in use, it can be rolled up and fixed above the front doors.

Instant or not – the private room issue

The main cabin is indeed an instant tent. But this does not hold for the rest, and I would say you have a hybrid structure here. For the back private room, you have an extra pole which you insert in the sleeve and with this, you can raise the back room from the ground.

In the case that you do not need the back room, or you have not enough ground space in the camp, you can leave it as it is. Note, it is already pre-attached to the main cabin part, so you can simply roll it as much as you can and keep close to the cabin wall.

The rain fly & other materials

The material is polyester, but they do not provide any information about the waterproof rating. I can only guess that it is rather limited, in the range 600 – 800 mm.

No info about the floor, it looks like a polyethylene. It is a catenary cut design. The poles are telescopic and this is steel.

The main fly you add separately for the cabin part. The back room is with the built-in fly so you have no extra work for this section.

Setup

They speak about two minutes setup and this is partly so, but only for the main cabin part. Adding the fly, and setting up the back room will take a few more minutes, but all in all, it is really easy. These pictures depict the process, but you have seen it also in the video above:

The setup is typical for such an instant tent.

Ventilation

You have two large mesh windows on the sides (they are also with panels for privacy and against the rain), and two windows are on the front doors, also with mesh and panels. The ceiling is all mesh as typical for all Ozark Trail tents (but see some of their dark rest tents). So in the situations without rain, this should be good enough.

But there are no floor vents here, and this is not so great if you have to keep the panels on the windows closed. Such floor vents would help with the vertical airflow.

The tent is shown without the fly, so you can see the mesh on the ceiling.

Inner features

The divider is a curtain which attaches to the ceiling and the walls by toggles, see the picture below, so it gives a minimal privacy. Much more privacy provides the private room, hence the name. If you do not need it closed, you can fix its wall to the cabin walls on the side, see the picture below.

The inner view without the divider.

You also have an electric cable port. A few very small pockets are on the wall, see the picture below, and I find this really inappropriate for such a big tent designed for 11 people. See this Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 tent which has 16 huge pockets (for 6 people). There is a lantern hook in the center as shown below.

Final thoughts, rating, pros & cons

In the conclusion of this Ozark Trail 11 Person 3 Room Instant Cabin Tent review, I would stress its main bonuses, the back room which is a really useful space, and the awning. The instant setup is also something very useful and suitable for people who change the camping place frequently.

But as you have seen, I have some objections regarding the inner features that are needed for comfort, as the absence of floor vents and practically useless wall pockets.

The tent is for summer camping and I would not put it to serious tests. The price tag is excellent so if you need a tent for occasional use in very mild weather conditions, this can certainly be an option to consider. See how I rate it.

What size is the pole for the private room? I lost mine and I’m having trouble finding one long enough.

Hi Felina, I am in a camping in the mountains only with occasional Internet connection so it is very difficult to search this for you. This brand belongs to Walmart so it is best to get in touch with them.

I plan on setting this up and leaving it up. What would you recommend that I put over it to make it more weather sustainable. And what size would I need I plan on having the private room up as well.

Hi Kathy, if you take Kelty Noah 16 tarp it will cover both part, its size is 4.88 x 4.88 m, this would cover the whole structure for sure. But the tent with the private room is T-shaped so perhaps this would not work well.

Another option would be to use Kelty Noah Tarp 9 that measures around 3×3 meters or Aqua Quest Guide Tarp 10 x 7 ft. This would be for the private room.

For the main part you would need something 14 x 10 ft or so, I could not find these dimensions among tarps. So you could go for two Aqua Quest Guide Tarps of the size 10 x 7 and combine them for the main part of the tent.

Yet another idea: take 3 of the Aqua Quest Guide tarps 10 x 7 and cover everything by combining them to fit the T-shape of the roof.

Terrible tent. Came out of the box broken and 3 poles snapped after trying to collapse it after 1 use. Terrible quality.

Hi Jordan, it is really bad to hear this, I can understand your frustration. If they shipped it broken, it was necessary to inform them and send back. On the other hand, if you check on Amazon, other users are very happy with it, just checked and the average rating is 4.3/5 based on 65 reports, which is incredibly high. So this was a bad lack in your case.
