Here you have a great combination of features, canvas tents with awning. So imagine, breathable and pleasant structures and awnings that extend the protected space outside.
Why having an awning
No matter how large the inner tent’s area can be, you will always want it extended in one way or another. Some tents may have a screen room, or a porch. But the simplest extension that still creates shade and gives some protection for sitting in front of the tent is an awning.
Sometimes there is not much difference between a tent’s porch and an awning. I see a porch as an extension that offers a bit more protection, in particular on the sides. But you will see a few examples where it may be difficult to decide if this is a porch or an awning. No matter how you can understand it, you will find such an extension useful.
The term canvas here describes either a pure cotton canvas or a polycotton, a blend of polyester and cotton. Tents with such a fabric are heavy, bulky, expensive, and they may be complicated to maintain.
But there are plenty of reasons why they are great. This is a breathable material and this makes lots of difference. In a breathable canvas tent, the problem of condensation is reduced to a minimum, and many of them also come with vents.
If you want a true 4-season tent, then this is a canvas tent that comes as close to this as possible. They perform better than synthetic tents both in a warm climate and in a cold climate. A canvas tent gives a bit of insulation and this is good in a cold climate. In summer it makes the atmosphere in a tent cool. Canvas tents sometimes come with stove pipe jacks so you can use a wood-burning stove in such a tent.
What types of tents are here
You will realize, there are tents here in all three main shapes, dome, cabin, and tunnel tents. But I have found also a teepee canvas tent with a very specific awning.
By the setup you have:
- Instant tents.
- Non-instant tents.
- Air-beam (inflatable) tents.
Regarding the shape you will see:
- Dome type tents.
- Cabin tents.
- Tunnel tents.
- Teepee tents.
My list of best canvas tents with awning
So here is my list, the tents are ordered alphabetically and the numbers are not for ranking:
1. Bushtec Adventure Alpha Kilo 4000 Canvas 6 Person Bow Tent
The picture above shows why this tent is here in the list. This is a dome structure, and such tents are not so frequent in the group of canvas tents. The minimal fly that protects the vents on the roof extends into an awning.
This is a single room structure and very tall for a dome tent and in general, the peak height is 84 inches (213 cm). You have one door and two windows. All openings are with mesh and panels. This is a 4-season use, incredibly durable and reliable, note that it is supported by spring steel.
The tent is very heavy with its 90 lb (40.8 kg) and bulky when packed. You have an area of 100 ft² (9.3 m²). The declared capacity is 6 people.
2. Bushtec Adventure Delta Zulu Combo Canvas 4 Person Chalet Tent with Gazebo
Here you have a 2-in-1 structure with a gazebo and with a tent, so the gazebo can be used separately. The structure is incredibly strongly built, waterproof and breathable, and suitable for all seasons and all climates. This is a framed tent and the meaning is that the frame itself is freestanding and you attach the rest to it.
The material is a very durable canvas and I see it also a dark-rest type structure although this is not pointed out by the manufacturer. The official capacity is only 4 people, and for this you have the inner area of 54 ft² (5 m²).
But see also the huge front covered area. Now, is this a porch or an awning? You decide how to call it. So the total covered area is 143 ft² (13.2 m²). This is a heavy structure, the weight is 127 lbs (58 kg).
3. Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent
Everything that you see in this Bushtec Adventure Echo 2200 Luxury Camping Tent is exceptional and impressive. You have a steel frame, two rooms with 6 windows, a huge awning/porch, and an overall quality that is hard to match. They give a 3-year warranty on all parts.
This is again one of the framed tents, so the frame is strong and self-supportive on its own. The tent is incredibly heavy, it weighs 500 lb (227 kg). The inner area is 206 ft² (19.18 m²) and the total covered area is 283 ft² (26.3 m²), so I have plenty of reasons to add it to my list of extra large tents. Because of its peak height of 10 ft (3 m), I have included it in my list of extra tall tents.
4. Crua Loj 6 Person Tent
There is no tent on the market that could be compared with this Crua Loj 6. This is an insulated tent and its R-value is 4 so imagine. You have a huge 3-room structure plus a fully enclosed porch, and plus a vestibule.
You have 3 external doors and 2 inner doors, the frame is steel and the material is breathable. The inner tent fabric is 65/35 ratio poly-cotton, and the outer shell is a laminated poly-cotton 80/20. It comes with a footprint included and with an insulated carpet. The materials are such that this is a dark rest design and you also have sound insulation. There are 6 PVC windows here.
The total inner protected area is 235 ft² (22 m²) and the porch area is 65 ft² (6 m²). The porch is without a floor, and the picture shows how huge the awning is.
5. Dream House Double Layers Waterproof Safari Glamping Tent
Here you have an impressive and luxurious tall polycotton tent with a peak height of 87 in (221 cm). So it is here because of its fabric which is a blend of cotton and polyester, and it is also included in my list of very tall family camping tents. The extension is a mix of a porch and awning, with a bit of side protection as you realize from the picture.
This is a freestanding structure with a strong steel frame. The waterproof rating is high and it offers great protection from elements in any weather conditions.
This is a heavy tent, so you have tent + poles that weigh 66.13 + 55.11 lb (30 + 25 kg). The inner area is 117 ft² (10.9 m²) but you also have that huge awning with the roof.
6. GEERTOP 4-6 Person Teepee Tent
This GEERTOP 4-6 Person Teepee Tent is unusual in many ways, to start with its shape and its two-wall design. This is one of the features that sets it apart from many teepees on the market. This is why I have added it also in my list of tents with a full-coverage fly.
But the tent is here in the list because of its polycotton fabric, a blend of cotton and polyester, and its awning which is quite unusual. The tent is a single-pole construction with a fully sealed floor, and with a footprint included. The waterproof rating for the fly is 2000 mm. The tent weighs 14.2 lb (6.45 kg) and the area is 107 ft² (9.9 m²).
7. Jet Tent F25DX 10 Person Camping Tent
When you see the picture of this F25DX tent you realize why it is here, see its huge awning. But this is also a poly-cotton or poly-canvas tent, which means they have added a bit of polyester to improve its performance. This is a very unique design and the list of its features is long.
The tent has 3 rooms, and the structure is a sort of an extended cabin with the central section which is an instant setup design. There are two extra poles that you add to the sides, and those give support to the two side rooms. The tent has 7 windows and you also have huge ventilation openings on the roof.
Note that the minimal coverage fly is synthetic, so you have full protection on the roof where you need it most. The floor is also synthetic but this is common for all tents here. The total inner area is 186 ft² (17.25 m²).
8. Kodiak Canvas 12×9 Canvas Cabin Tent
This is a unique cabin-style tent and it is also particularly tall with its 90 inches (229 cm) peak height. This is a pure canvas tent except for the floor which is synthetic. You have top quality craftsmanship and the tent is totally reliable and you can use it throughout the year and in all weather conditions.
You have a steel frame plus two poles that you use for an awning configuration shown in the picture above, so you realize why it is here in the list. It has 2 doors (with windows), plus 4 separate windows.
The area is 108 ft² (10 m²) and the declared capacity is 6 people. As usual with canvas tents, this is a very heavy structure, 92 lb (41.7 kg).
9. Kodiak Canvas Deluxe 8 Person Tent
This Kodiak Canvas Deluxe 8 person tent is probably one of the best-known canvas tents on the market, a waterproof yet breathable cotton canvas construction. It is an incredibly well-built with a steel frame and a Flex-Bow roof, you have 2 doors and 4 windows.
Features that make it different from their Basic tents series are two windows more, vents, a hanging organizer, and a gear loft that are missing in the Basic series. The integrated awning shown in the picture above is the reason for having it here in the list.
The tent is heavy with its 79 lb (35.8 kg), and its dimensions are 14 x 10 ft (4.3 x 3 m) so the area is 140 ft² (13 m²).
10. Kodiak Canvas Flex Bow Basic 6 Person Tent 10 x 10
The word Basic in the name of this tent is to distinguish it from some other models of the same brand, one is shown in the text above. In reality, this is a really luxurious camping tent with a walk around height and it is suitable for all seasons and for all climates.
You have two doors and two separate mesh windows that are also equipped with panels. The reason for having it here in the list is its 6 x 6 ft awning on one side.
The tent weighs 68 lb (30.8 kg), so bear this in mind when you plan to transport it to your camping area. It is not freestanding but you have 18 long steel stakes included in the package. The official capacity is 6 people and the floor area is 100 ft² (9.3 m²).
11. Kodiak Canvas Flex Bow VX Waterproof Quick Tent 6011 With Tarp
This is again a tent from the same brand, a canvas tent with a fabric that is kept breathable, a tall and pleasant structure with a walk-around comfort, and a huge awning. The tent has 2 doors and 4 + 2 windows. All these openings are double-layer structures with mesh and canvas panels.
The area is 100 ft² (9.3 m²) and the declared capacity is 6 people. It weighs 68 lb (30.8 kg), and it is bulky when packed. The structure is suitable for all-year-round use, and it is also suitable for all climates. The frame is steel and as the name suggests, you have spring steel rods that create tension in the roof. Note also that you have a bonus tarp included.
12. OzTent 30 Second Expedition Tent RV 5
Here you have a very popular tent and an instant setup design. One person can indeed raise it in under 30 seconds. But I must add, there is a price for that, it costs a lot and its packed size is 78.7 x 15.7 x 7.1 inches (200 x 40 x 18 cm), so not every car can be used to transport this tent. The reason for such a length in the packed size is its frame which is preattached to the tent.
But this is an exceptional award-winning design, a fully waterproof tent suitable for all seasons and for all climates. You have openings on all sides, and all of them are with mesh and closable panels. This is also a tent with a stand-up height and the awning is simply impressive.
13. Springbar Highline 8 Tent
In this Highline 8 tent you have 140 ft² (13 m²) of the area. This is a single-room structure with a single but large door and several large windows. The tent is with the 78 inches (198 cm) peak height. It is here because this is a canvas tent, and you also have a great integrated awning.
The tent is heavy and bulky when packed but this is a very strong and clever steel construction so only two legs-poles support the structure. This is why it is not freestanding. In spite of its size and weight, one person can set it up easily.
This is a tent for all seasons, designed to perform well in any climate. It makes the atmosphere cooler in a warmer climate, and it gives a bit of insulation when used in a cold environment.
14. Teton Sports Mesa 14 Canvas Tent
This Mesa 14 tent is a part of the series which includes several tents built in the same style. It is very similar to the Springbar 8 tent, but when you look closer you realize that there are some important differences, this includes 2 doors which you have here on the two sides and also the roof poles structure is different. It is also more affordable than the Springbar Highline 8 tent.
The dimensions are 14 x 10 ft (427 x 305 cm) so the total area is 140 ft² (13 m²). As you see from the picture above, it comes with a great integrated awning so I have a good reason to include it here in the list. The fabric is 100% canvas and the frame is steel. This is a tent for all seasons and for all climates.
15. White Duck Outdoors Family Explorer Basic 10 x 14 Canvas Camping Tent
This is an 8-person tent built in the same style as several tents shown above. All fabric is canvas except for the floor, and they did not do any waterproof coating so the structure is fully breathable but it is waterproof.
There are two doors and both are with large mesh windows, plus two separate windows. It is 78 inches (198 cm) tall and the area is 140 ft² (13 m²). The tent is heavy, it weighs 86 lb (39 kg). The canvas is silver-coated for heat reflection so it stays cool even in a warm environment.
16. White Duck Outdoors Family Explorer Deluxe 10 x 10 Camping Tent
This White Duck Explorer Deluxe is a modified version of their Explorer Basic tent shown above. So you have additional triangular windows on the side visible in the picture. The total number of windows is 4 plus 2 windows on the doors, so you have views on all sides.
You have a flex-bow steel roof construction and a canvas tent which is fully breathable while still being waterproof. The total area is 100 ft² (9.3 m²) and the tent is quite heavy, it weighs 89 lb (40.4 kg). But in spite of that, one person can set it up easily. Please follow the link to find out more.
17. Wildcat Outdoor Gear Premium Family Camping Tent Bobcat 500
This incredible Wildcat Outdoor Gear Premium Family Camping Tent Bobcat 500 is here because of its removable awning which you see in the picture, but this is an impressive poly-cotton ventilated 4-room 4-season tent with solid windows, and air beams instead of poles. So I have included it also in my list of best inflatable tents.
The tent has 2 external doors, 7 solid tinted windows, and 2 closable mesh windows. There are also 3 huge vents, and observe that the fabric itself is breathable. The tent is with a huge area of 202 ft² (18.8 m²), and this is why I have included it in my list of extra large tents. Please follow the link for more.
