Here you have a long list of hinged door camping tents for family camping, with the capacity in the range 6 – 10 people, and you have models for various climates and seasons, including winter tents.
What is a tent’s hinged door
This is a design with poles that go along the perimeter of the door, and this makes the door a rigid and usually D-shaped structure. You have a vertical pole on one side and the door rotates around it, so it acts as an axis. The remaining one or two poles go around and give the door its shape. A bit more you have in my separate text.
Such hinged doors follow the profile of the tent’s wall and you have them in cabin style tents with straightened and steep walls. But surprisingly, you can find them also in some dome-style tents, you will see some examples below.
Why would you want a hinged door tent
This is all about convenience, you have a feeling of a real door at home. They are usually designed with Velcro tabs which keep them closed and you do not have to deal with the zipper all the time.
But you usually have a storm flap as well which protects it, but sometimes it may be annoying to deal with it. In the upper part of the door, the storm flap is on the surrounding wall so that the rainwater runs over the door, and in the lower part the storm flap is on the door itself.
My list of best tents with hinged doors
Here I give my list with tents, and more details below. The tents are ordered by the declared capacity from smaller to larger. Note that this does not always correspond to the floor area. Some of 6-person tents here are far bigger than 10 person tents.
- Coleman Elite Sundome Tent with LED Light System
- Coleman Tenaya Lake 6 Person Fast Pitch Cabin with Cabinets
- Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent
- Russian Bear Winter Tent With Stove Included
- Coleman Bristol 8P Modified Dome with Hinged Door
- Coleman Evanston Tent 8
- Coleman Jenny Lake 8 Tent
- Coleman Montana 8 Person Tent With Hinged Door
- Coleman Octagon 98 Full Fly Tent
- L.L.Bean Acadia 8 Person Tent
- Coleman Hampton 9 Person Tent
- Coleman Cabin Tent with Instant Setup
- Coleman WeatherMaster 10 Person Tent
- Regarding the construction, these hinged door tents include cabin style, dome-style, extended dome style, and tunnel style tents.
- Regarding the best use, most of them are summer camping tents, one or two are 3-season tents, but you also have true winter tents here.
- As for the inner structure, you have single room, 2-room, and 3-room tents.
- Have you heard of the so-called dark rest tents? You have those here included as well.
1. Coleman Elite Sundome Tent with LED Light System
This is a typical dome style tent, just two main poles creating the usual X-shaped structure. So this is an aerodynamic construction that behaves nicely in windy conditions. Though the poles are fiberglass and I would not put too much pressure on them. The capacity is 6 people, but in view of its dome shape, there is no much headspace here.
The good thing is that the tent has two doors, both protected by awnings, and the hinged door is visible in the picture above. The other door on the opposite side is the standard design.
As indicated in its name, it comes with a built-in LED lighting system that provides bright overhead light. You have a wall switch to select between high, low and nightlight modes. The system is CPX 6 compatible and it is powered by an included battery cartridge with 4 D-batteries or a rechargeable cartridge. It provides 100 lumens at high, 42 at low mode, and 5 lumens at nightlight mode. The runtime is 26 hours (high), 65 hours (low), 81 hours (nightlight).
2. Coleman Tenaya Lake 6 Person Fast Pitch Cabin with Cabinets
Here you have a cabin style tent with pre-attached poles on the roof and this is behind the words ‘fast pitch’ in the name. This is a structure with a hub, with color-coding, and with Coleman’s Insta-Clip suspension. The tent has a room divider for extra privacy, so technically this is a 2-room tent.
As the name suggests, here you have 2 built-in cabinets behind the tent with shelves for extra gear storage. If you have small dogs with you, this is where you can accommodate them. In such a case you would not install the shelves of course. These cabinets are only with the access from inside the tent.
The fly is minimal, designed to cover the roof only. You would not want it bigger here because of the huge windows everywhere around. The hinged door is visible in the picture, it is equipped with a handle and you have Velcro tabs to keep it in place during the day, but you can zip it up completely during the night. Note that this is the only door here, which is not so great in view of its size.
The tent is too small for its declared capacity, divide it by half if you want to have any comfort. Speaking of comfort, you have an e-port here, and a couple of very small pockets on the walls. Note that its carry bag is with wheels; its weight is 33.2 lb (15.06 kg) so you might indeed need them.
Note that they have yet another version of this tent on the market, which is with a back closet, just to know if you would prefer this instead of the two tiny cabinets.
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 6 people.
- Weight: 33.2 lb (15.06 kg).
- Dimensions:
– the main part: 13 x 7 ft (396 x 213 cm).
– 2 cabinets: 2 x 2 ft (61 x 61 cm). - Total floor area: 99 ft² (9.2 m²).
- 1-year limited warranty.
3. Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent
This tent is described in detail in my separate review, so here I give only some basic features so that you can make a comparison with the other tents in the list.
This is a tent with a screen room, and it is really large; you have 54 ft² (6.7 m²) of floor area in the screen room. Note that there is no tarp on the floor in the screen room. The remaining part is yet another big floored area, fully sealed from the ground. So this is a 2-room cabin type tent by the design.
The hinged door is the topic here, so you can see it in the picture, this is a very typical D-shaped style door with poles in the sleeves which make it a rigid structure.
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 6 people.
- Weight: 32 lb (14.5 kg).
- Dimensions: 11 x 9 ft (3.35 x 2.74 m).
- Floor area: 99 ft² (9.2 m²).
- Packed size (L x D): 41 x 10 in (104 x 25 cm).
Note that they have launched yet another variant of this tent with the integrated light under the name Coleman Elite WeatherMaster Screened 6 Person Tent With Built In LED Light.
4. Russian Bear Winter Tent With Stove Included
This is a tent from the group of tents for cold weather camping and I have included it in the list which you can see if you follow the link. The design and features are pretty unique. This is an instant tent of a particular type, it opens from inside, like an umbrella, and one person can do this easily.
This is a winter tent in the true sense, so you have a wood stove included in the package. The price is steep but you wouldn’t expect anything else from such a winter camping tent.
It has a hinged door which is completely removable and it is unlike any other door in the tents here in the list. You can see it in the picture above.
Please see more in this video:
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 6 people.
- Diameter: 11.4 ft (3.5 m).
- Floor area: 102 ft² (9.6 m²).
- Wood stove included.
Note that they have yet another version for up to 5 people and you can order it without or with a stove, the Russian-Bear Hot Tent with a Stove Jack.
5. Coleman Bristol 8P Modified Dome with Hinged Door
This tent is here because of its hinged door, but this is also a ventilated tent with three windows, an awning, and a great price tag. The structure is an extended dome, and you have an E-cable port included.
The weight is 28.5 lb (12.9 kg) and the inner floored area is 112 ft² (10.4 m²). The poles are fiberglass and the fabric is a polyester with their standard WeatherTec system with inverted seams.
6. Coleman Evanston 8 person family dome tent
This tent looks so compact, but it is with a larger floor area than the Coleman Octagon 8 which is below in the list. Such an impression is because of its dome structure which is large on the base but doesn’t contain as much volume as a cabin style tent.
There are 3 poles on the dome, plus one that creates an awning which you can see in the picture. So the hinged door is fully protected by the awning, and the pole is there also to allow for the door swinging. A smaller awning is also on the back where it protects a mesh window.
You have an electric cable port, and there are a few storage pockets inside for small items. The declared capacity is clearly based on a backpacking principle, but for ordinary camping, this is a tent for a maximum of 5 people.
Please see more in this video:
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 8 people.
- Weight: 24.49 lb (11.1 kg).
- Dimensions: 12 x 12 ft (3.66 x 3.66 m).
- Floor area: 144 ft² (13.4 m²).
- Packed size: 28.5 x 10.5 x 10 in (72 x 27 x 25 cm).
- 1-year limited warranty.
7. Coleman Jenny Lake 8 Tent
This Coleman Jenny Lake 8 Tent comes with two doors and one of them is a hinged door shown in the picture above. But this tent also comes with a cabinet on the back and this is why I have included it in my list of best tents with cabinets.
This is a tall 2-room cabin with 7 windows in total. One particular feature here is its auto-roll windows system which you have in some of the windows. I do not remember any other tent with such a feature.
The tent is also with a fast-pitch design used in many tents of Coleman, and it comes with an e-cable port. It weighs 41.1 lb (18.6 kg) and the floor area is 121 ft² (11.2 m²). The poles are combination of steel and fiberglass.
8. Coleman Montana 8 person tent with hinged door
I have added on purpose the picture below showing the Montana 8 tent without the fly because its structure is best seen that way. So as you realize, this is an extended dome type tent, and the hinged door is on the main central dome part of the structure.
The tent is not freestanding, and this is a single-room structure. It is formally a 3-season camping tent but note that you do not have a full-coverage fly (follow the link below to see more), so I would not use it for camping in a very rainy area. The hinged door is a cool feature here, but this is the only door and this is one of my objections to this tent.
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 8 people.
- Weight: 24.5 lb (11.11 kg).
- Dimensions: 16 x 7 ft (488 x 213 cm).
- Floor area: 10.4 m².
- Packed size: 27.5 x 9.25 x 9 in (70 x 23.5 x 23 cm).
9. Coleman Octagon 98 Full Fly Tent – Coleman Signature
This is an exceptional design, as the name suggests an octagonal structure with a hubbed design. You have 8 poles that converge to the hub element in the center. The tent is freestanding and as the name suggests, with a full coverage fly. So you have a complete protection from elements here. But when the weather is great you can unzip the fly and enjoy the views through its panoramic mesh windows, those zips are visible as the vertical orange stripes in the picture below.
The tent has two doors and a removable divider in the middle, and in such a configuration each of the two rooms has its own entrance door. The declared capacity makes no much sense, this tent is very livable and with lots of headroom, but the floor area is far too small for 8 people. Use it for 4 and you will have a great tent for camping in a 3-season use.
Please see this video showing how to set the tent up and how to add poles in the hinged door sleeves:
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 8 people.
- Weight: 49.3 lb (22.4 kg).
- Diameter: 13 ft (4 m).
- Floor area: 122 ft² (11.3 m²).
10. L.L.Bean Acadia 8 Person Tent
This tent comes with a unique door design. It includes two poles visible in the picture, and also magnets for easy closure. So I have included it also in my list of best tents with magnetic doors.
It is a tall and pleasant 2-room cabin type family camping shelter, the peak height here is 6’10” (208 cm).
The tent comes also with a cable port and a gear loft included. The weight is 37 lb 8 oz (17 kg), and its official capacity is 8 people. For this you have an inner area of 119.5 ft² (11.1 m²).
11. Coleman Hampton 9 Person Tent
If you did not know what a cabin tent is, here is the most typical example. I guess more ‘cabin’ a tent cannot be, everything is square, rectangular, and boxy here. The walls are almost completely vertical and flat and the tent is very tall. So the hinged door which you see in the picture perfectly fits such a structure and you will have a feeling of being in a real room.
The dimensions are such that you could easily fit 2 queen airbeds and have some spare space in between. But the declared capacity of 9 people is based on the backpacking principle so better not to think of such a number of people in this tent.
The tent is with a removable divider, so this is a 2-room structure. There is a cable port available. This is a summer camping tent so do not plan to use it in a cold environment or to have snow on the roof. It must be staked down, such a boxy structure is not so stable in the case of a sudden wind. Note that the tent is not an instant design, I have seen such an incorrect statement on Amazon.
Basic specifications
- Capacity: 9 people.
- Weight: 31.24 lb (14.2 kg).
- Dimensions: 14 x 10 ft (4.3 x 3.05 m).
- Floor area: 140 ft² (13 m²).
- Packed size: 37 x 12 x 10 in (94 x 30 x 25 cm).
12. Coleman Cabin Tent with Instant Setup
This 10-person tent has two doors and one of them is hinged type, so this is why it is in the list here. But this tent has quite a number of other great features. So this is an instant setup design and you can have the tent ready in one minute. The tent is also with all dark rest features so you can sleep longer in the morning.
As you realize from the picture, this is a very typical cabin style tent with a minimal fly, and you have large windows on all sides. It comes with a divider so you can have two rooms.
The weight is 42 lb (19 kg), the area is 140 ft² (13 m²) and the tent’s peak height is 79 inches (201 cm). The packed size is 42 x 9 x 9 inches (107 x 23 x 23 cm).
13. Coleman WeatherMaster 10 Person tent
This Coleman WeatherMaster 10 is a hybrid type with features of both cabin and tunnel tents. This means it is rather tall, with steep walls, and with a minimal rain fly which covers the ceiling only.
But it is here because of its doors, there are two of them and one is the hinged door. The doors are with mesh windows which you can keep partly open even when it is raining because of small awnings above the doors. There are also several separate meshed windows, and two of them are angled and positioned under the fly, so they can stay open all the time.
The waterproof rating is only 450 mm due to its PU coating. This may not look much, but this will be completely enough for a normal summertime camping. Note that the floor is a bathtub-style design.
With so much mesh on the ceiling and large windows this tent is not the best option for a cold environment, so use it for summer camping and you will enjoy it. To set up this tent, it is best to do it with a partner, and this is doable in less than half an hour. Everything is color-coded and this makes the procedure so easy. The weight is 31 lb (14.1 kg) and the floor area is 140 ft² (13 m²).
Final thoughts
The list of hinged door camping tents presented here is a very thorough cross-section of what you have on the market regarding these family camping tents. There are a few models that are not included here, but I have tried to include the most typical representatives from various types and groups. For example, the Coleman WeatherMaster model exists in other sizes.
So here you have plenty of options to choose for various weather situations. Most of the tents are Coleman’s items and they are usually very affordable. Please follow the links to see more.

Hello. I appreciate your reviews. I was hoping to get some more specific advice. I am looking for a tent for light/recreational camping. I prefer the cabin style to the dome style as its very convenient for being able to stand up when getting dressed or whatever. I also consider the hinged door to be a must. It is only required for me and one other person (one queen airbed or two cots), so it doesn’t need to be very big but I do want to be able to move around comfortably. I am not interested in the instant tents because I have heard they take a bit more storage room and setup is not an issue for me. A rain fly that covers all the windows will be needed as it does tend to rain a little bit where I camp. I have been looking at a lot of tents and reviews and so far my favorite is the ll bean acadia 4 or 6 person (8×8 or 10×10). I am not interested in the attached screen rooms, closets, or room dividers. Any help would be graetly appreciated.

Hi, I think you should consider the Coleman Octagon 98 Full Fly Tent, it is here in the list. It has all you need.
A bit more from my last summer camping. I was in Slovenian Alps in a camp, and next to me was a person from Spain who was using it for himself as a solo tent with plenty of room for his climbing equipment. He came two weeks earlier and was telling me that there was a deluge before I came, and the tent was completely dry inside. He could not find enough good words for the tent.

Our 20 yr old tent finally called it quits. So I’ve been searching to the ends of the internet for a new one. Lots of new developments in the tent world since our last purchase (like hinged doors!), and your site has been my go-to tent educator. Meticulously curated and categorized. And with updates! Thank you for putting in the time and effort. Your site is a gem within the internet.
JV says
Hi Julie, this comment is the first thing I am reading this morning, so you made my day. Many thanks.
Tanja curtis says
Wondering if an 8-10 person instant setup tent with a hinged or magnetic door is a “unicorn”?
JV says
Not really. You have this Columbia Modified 8 Person Dome Tent with a magnetic door.
On the other hand, the Coleman Instant Cabin 10 Person Tent in the list here is both instant and with a hinged door, it is 10-person and also dark rest type.
Cheryl A. Gayfield says
I just attempted to purchase the 10 person camp & to my disappointment it has been discontinued by the manufacturer.
JV says
Not sure which tent this is. The only two 10-pwerson tents in the list are from Coleman and both are on the market.
Isabel Leon says
Hi, thanks for this article.
I’m driving myself crazy looking for the perfect tent for our needs. Finally found the Coleman Vacationer 10 that is no longer made. So can’t buy it…
What’s your recommendation for a 6-8 person tent, with a hinged door and a screen room with floor? Is there such a tent out there? Thanks!
JV says
Hi Isabel, you are right, the Coleman Vacationer 10 is not available on the market. You have several better options here from the same brand. Check their Coleman Elite WeatherMaster Screened 6 Person Tent With Built-In LED Light and also Coleman WeatherMaster 6 Person Screened Tent. Both are with a screen room and these are enormously popular tents.
But they have no floor in the screen room. You will not find a tent with the floor in the screen room and also with a hinged door. You do not need a floor in such a screen room because this area is not fully protected from the rain so the floor will become wet. On the other hand, a screen room is used with chairs and tables and those would damage the floor so it is better not to have it.
There are some other options here without a screen room and they are very similar to the Coleman Vacationer tent that you wanted. In any case, these are all hinged door tents currently on the market.
Isabel Leon says
Hi. Thanks for the quick reply.
I’ve checked out the weathermaster 6 But would need a floor on the screen porch. It’s to keep my pups contained and bug and dirt free while we are at the campsite cooking etc.
I may end up buying the weathermaster but I have some time to keep looking. Maybe a two room tent with the plastic windows in the living area… the search continues.
JV says
Hi Isabel, there are tents with the floor in the screen room, check in my separate list with screen room tents. I was just saying that you would not find it in combination with a hinged door.
Isabel Leon says
Yup. The tent I need Is not available with both things I need. I am looking thru your list for a two room tent now. Hopefully I can settle on something before next spring/summer. Thanks again for doing all this research, it’s been very helpful.
Corie says
Thanks for the great info! What would be the best tent for a 6 person, hinged door, dark tent, instant set up?
JV says
Hi Corie, I am afraid I do not understand the question so can only guess. If you mean a 6 person tent with all those three features, then there is no such an option in the list. But there is this Coleman Instant Cabin 10 Person Tent that has all these features, and it is perfect for 6 people because declared capacity is usually unrealistic, and this holds here as well, it is too small for 10 users.
But if you mean 6 person and with one of the three features, I would suggest this Coleman Air Valdes 6XL, this is a dark rest and almost instant because of its inflatable beams. But for winter use this would be the Russian Bear Winter Tent as an instant tent.
Let me know more and I shall be happy to help.
Michelle Olson says
I have been researching the Coleman dark tent, and from what I am seeing, it no longer has the instant setup design (despite keeping the name). My unicorn is an 8+ instant cabin with hinged door, but i do not think it exists. Fwiw, my sister and i both got the Montana a few years ago. Her poles broke and our door zipper broke. Also, I always see setup times in these reviews, but I am more concerned about time to tear down and pack away, as that is usually when I am tired and over it. Thanks for the article, its been very helpful.
JV says
Hi Michelle, thank you for the comment. In fact, Coleman still has some instant setup tents with dark rest design. You can see this Coleman Cabin Tent with Instant Setup 10 person as a great example. One could argue about how much a tent reduces the glare of course. The tent you mentioned indeed is not on the market.
Aly says
Thanks to the info you left for another commenter, I’m planning to purchase the Coleman, Hampton 9-Person 3 Season Dome Shape Tent! Thanks so much!!!!
JV says
Most welcome Aly, it is great to hear that the text and the comment were useful. All the best.
Troy Hemingway says
Thanks for the non-biased reviews for family tents. I have a business where we provide tents for mission trip groups in Mexico. We set them up before they arrive and take them down after they leave. Groups size is anywhere from 50 to 300. The tents are sometimes up for weeks at a time as groups come an go. They take a beating from the sun mostly and occasional wind gusts. The hinged doors caught my eye as I have been searching for a “zipperless” tent for the past 15 years to no avail. The zippers, always the zippers are the first to go and can only be fixed so many times. At any rate what mid to large size tent would you recommend for this type of use. Any info would be helpful. Thanks again for the article. Troy.
JV says
Hi Troy, thank you for the kind words. I have seen your comment also in another post here in the site and it seems you have a real issue with these zippers. So yes, hinged door design is the closest that comes to what you need. These tents also have zippers but you do not have to use them of course. They have Velcro tabs that keep them in place and the door is closed even without the zipper. Motivated by your question I added a text which you can see here.
Note the following, if the wall is not nearly vertical, the door can simply go through the opening and into the tent unless it is zippered. So if you go for such a design it is best to check the cabin tents with as vertical walls as possible. You have several great models here in the list, so for your purpose check Coleman Hampton, Coleman Octagon and also Coleman Valdes which is a fully enclosed tent with PVC windows but with air beams and multiple rooms.
Troy Hemingway says
Thank JV. I am going to get a few different models (with hinged doors) for this season and see how they pan out. Will let you know what happens.
JV says
Most welcome Troy. It will be great indeed to hear how they behave. Yes, it is a wise idea to try several different models.
Robert Hewitt says
I really appreciate the information you have provided me on this site. I need a new tent and I appreciate the fact that you are not a manufacturer’s site. I like the honest customer reviews and the frank discussion.
JV says
Many thanks Robert, it is really great to read your lines. Much appreciated.
