This technology has been around for a number of years already but it is becoming very popular recently. Such air inflatable tents are a bit heavy though they usually pack well, so these are camping tents for places with a motorized access.

So what you will find here

  • The most important feature is that these are all air beam tents of course.
  • The site is about family camping tents, therefore all the tents here in the list are for 4 people and more.
  • One tent is with an extra metal pole, combined with the air beams.
  • Some of the tents are 2-room structures, some are with 3 and 4 rooms, and believe it or not, you will find some great examples of 5-room tents.
  • Several of the tents here are so-called dark rest tents or “lights out” tents. This means that the sleeping area is darker and with reduced glare, so you can sleep longer in the morning and also take a nap during the day.
  • The tents from the dark-room type group are a hybrid single layer and double layer. This implies the following: the living zone is a single-layer area while the sleeping areas are double-layer. This is good because of the condensation issues which are normally more important during the night when you sleep. All Vango tents are of this type.
  • Some of the tents are single-layer type.
  • You will see also canvas tents here.
  • Most of the tents here are designed as 3-season tents. So you definitely have full protection from the rain, their waterproof rating is usually very high.
  • These tents are more suitable for a cooler environment. This is because of their design where you do not have mesh on the ceiling so typical for summer camping tents. It is important to know this to avoid any unpleasant experience.
  • Several of the tents here in the list are from the Vango brand. This should not be surprising because this is the top brand for such tents, and as far as I know they started this industry.

It can be described as a 2-room type because of its removable divider. There is one door only, visible in the picture, and 6 windows. Inside, you have many wall pockets for storage, and also an E-cable port. The fly is minimal and it allows for a stargazing configuration.

Note that this combination also includes the Cocoon Insulated tents used in the Duo tents.

But you can use this Core 6 tent as it is, alone and without anything else. This is a huge structure with 192 ft² (17.8 m²) of the floor area, so this gives 32 ft² (2.97 m²) per person. But there is still the huge porch area which adds 67 ft² (6.25 m²) of the protected space, see the picture. This is an incredibly tall tent with a 7.5 ft (229 cm) peak height.

The tent comes with an impressive 4000 mm waterproof rating for the shell and 10000 mm for the floor. It is very heavy and bulky when packed but this is not surprising when you see its total floor area which is 21 m² (226 ft²). Note that the declared capacity is only 5 people, so this is a very luxurious camping option. Please read more in my full review.

You have solid windows, excellent ventilation, and numerous storage options. The inner floored area is huge, you have 242 ft² (22.5 m²), and 9.9 square meters of this is the living room. This is why it is also in my list of extra large family camping tents. The weight is 66.1 lb (30 kg).

This is an incredibly comfortable tent supported by air beams, so there are no solid pols here. It offers 4 rooms, solid windows and 3 doors with covered entrances. The inner area rooms includes 3 bedrooms and one large living room. There is also a large front porch visible in the picture.

The peak height is 86.6 inches (220 cm), and the total floored area is 244 ft² (22.7 m²). So I have all the good reasons to include it in my lists of extra large family camping tents and extra tall tents.

The fabric is polycotton, and the tent is suitable for year round family camping. Note that its official capacity is 6 people, but it can easily accommodate 12. The weight is 108.5 lb (49.2 kg).

30. Coleman Valdes Deluxe 6 XL Air BlackOut Bedroom Family Tent

So this tent is supported with inflatable beams and this is why it is here, but it has many great features. This is a very large 4-room structure with a fully closable porch which is practically one extra floorless room.

The tent’s floor area is 244.3 ft² (22.7 m²), and the mentioned porch adds 75.3 ft² (7 m²). Because of these numbers, it is also in my list of extra large family camping tents.

It can be described as a 3-season tunnel-type structure. Its inner tents are from a very dark material so this is an excellent dark-rest tent as well. The tent is tall and with solid windows, and it has many high vents. The weight is 84.7 lb (38.4 kg).

31. Hi-Gear Horizon 700 Air Nightfall Tent

Hi-Gear Horizon 700 Air Nightfall Tent.
Hi-Gear Horizon 700 Air Nightfall Tent.

This tent is here because it is supported by air beams, and you have them 5 in total. It is officially for 7 people only, but here you have an inner area of 260.5 ft² (24.2 m²), plus a porch area of 114 ft² (10.6 m²).

So this is one of the largest tents on the market, and it offers 4 rooms inside plus the porch. It is included in my list of extra large family camping tents. The tent is with dark rest bedrooms, this is behind the word Nightfall in the name, and it is also with solid tinted windows.

32. Berghaus Telstar 8 Nightfall Air Tent

Berghaus Telstar 8 Nightfall Air Tent
Berghaus Telstar 8 Nightfall Air Tent.

This tent is without any solid pole. Even the brim on the side is with an air beam. There are 5 rooms but there is also a large porch with a removable floor. This is why it is also in my list of best 5 room tents.

As for the area, the inner floored space is 273.4 ft² (25.4 m²), and the porch offers 101.2 ft² (9.4 m²). The tent is very  pleasant and tall, and its bedrooms are dark rest type. You also have E-cable ports and solid windows. The weight is 114.4 lb (51.9 kg).

33. Coleman Weathermaster 8XL Air BlackOut Tent

Coleman Weathermaster 8XL Air BlackOut Tent
Coleman Weathermaster 8XL Air BlackOut Tent.

This tent is here because of its inflatable beams and this is a great example of the air beams technology. But this is an incredible structure that includes 5 rooms and a fully protected porch.

You have two inner tents, one with three bedrooms and removable dividers, and one separate inner tent. The latter can be removed if you want more space in the living room. The front porch is fully protected so it looks like the sixth room without floor.

This is also what they call the BlackOut tent, and this means bedrooms are dark rest type. They claim it blocks up to 99% of daylight. I have included it inn my list of best dark rest tents.

The tent has two doors and many solid and mesh windows. There are many storage pouches and a cable port. Ventilation is excellent, and this includes numerous low and high vents, plus mesh doors and windows. They claim that the tent offers also temperature management.

The weight is 98 lb (44.4 kg), and the floored area is 285 ft² (26.5 m²). The porch adds 77.5 ft² (7.2 m²). Note also that the tent is tall, you have a peak height of 84.6 inches (215 cm).

34. Berghaus Kepler 9 Nightfall Air Tent

Berghaus Kepler 9 Nightfall Air Tent view.
Berghaus Kepler 9 Nightfall Air Tent.

The tent is without solid poles, you have air beams instead, so this is why it is here. Its area is impressive, you have 290 ft² (26.9 m²) of the floored space, plus 37.7 ft² (3.5 m²) under the porch visible in the picture.

The inner space is organized into 4 rooms, and its three bedrooms are dark-rest type. You also have 7 windows, and dual cable access. The weight is considerable 92.6 lb (42 kg), but this is a huge tent.

You might want to know that they also have a smaller version, the Berghaus Kepler 6 Nightfall Air Tent with 199 ft² (18.45 m²) of the floored area.

Final thoughts

So this was my list of best inflatable tents for camping, and as you realize many of them are really comfortable structures. This is because many of them are designed for areas with lots of rain where people are forced to spend more time in the tent, and for this reason, you have such generously sized living areas. Most of them are with exceptionally high weather resistance, so these shelter will surely keep you dry.

This is an attractive design in general, air beams are easy to inflate, and you can really set them up in a few minutes, there is nothing to guess, no color-coded poles and flies. So I believe this concept will only be gaining popularity.

You might want to check my separate list with inflatable canvas tents. Thank you for reading. I wonder what you think about this innovative technology, please use the comment box below. Have a nice day.

    Hello,
My husband and I are 70 and looking for an easier tent to setup. My current REI Kingdom 6 person tent weighs 19 pounds. Why are all of these tents so heavy? Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Hi Denise, inflatable tents have massive air beams, they are usually in long sleeves with zippers, so this is one of reasons for the weight. Besides, many of them are very large.

I can suggest something but please let me know more, what type of tent, what budget, for what use, how many seasons, etc.

Thanks for this great article! I’m considering buying the Vango Ringstead Air Adult Mixed Inflatable Tent. However, I read on your review that you think it’s better suited for a cooler climate than for a warm area. I’m planning to use it in Spain (in the mountains) so I’m a bit worried it may be too hot in the summer. Do you think the ventilation will be good enough to keep if cool or should I go for a different tent? Does the main door have a mesh (or are these only on the windows)? Thanks

Hi Jordi, the door has two full-size separate layers, and one is mesh, so this is not a problem as long as the sky is clear and you should have plenty of ventilation. My comment was mainly related to situations when you have to keep the door closed when it is raining for an extended period of time. This is why some other designs may work better, like those where the door is under a deep porch. However, tents with a porch or awning may not be the best option in windy places. Thus is why the Vango tent is actually good in such situations, it is quite aerodynamic.

If you want a beautiful, strong and waterproof tent go for the Vango Keswick 600DLX. We have had one since they came out in 2018 and it has stood the test of time. We have had it in gale force winds and rain and it never leaked! It is made from polycotton which gives it a feel of quality and with the blackout bedrooms, fully enclosed cooking area at the front and side pod for our chemical toilet, what else can anyone wish for?
We bought a Keswick windbreak to finish off the ensemble, we travel the UK 3 times a year camping, in the knowledge that we have one of the best looking, reassuringly protected from any weather tents on the market today, might we add that people on campsites always come over to have a look at our tent.

Thank you Ann, this is indeed a great tent. It is a pity that they do not have it at big sellers in the US. Interesting to read about the windbreak, I wonder if this more for privacy.

Vango is one of the best know brands that build air beam tents. There are several different tents in the Odyssey series. Can you say more, which tent exactly is this?

How durable are these? I’ve had several air mattresses that leak slowly and you wake up in a pile on the floor, I would hate to wake up in the morning with a collapsed tent…

Hi Carl, about mattresses first, I put one almost three months ago on the upper floor in the house where we do some exercises, as a place to stretch on the floor, and it is still the same as it was the first day. I am pleasantly surprised, it is an ordinary pad, an unknown brand. But I do understand you, this is the main issue with inflatable mattresses so you are right about it. As for the beams in these tents, this technology has been developing for more than a decade already so I would say it is quite reliable. The beams are inside a shell tube so they are protected, they can be taken out and repaired if something is wrong. It is always good to deal with a reliable brand that has good customer support.
